Climate Change May Mean No More Guacamole

Just when we thought we’ve heard all the dire warnings regarding global warming there are to hear, along comes another.

This time it is from Chipotle Mexican Grill. The company is warning that they may have to suspend the sale of guacamole at their restaurants.

And why is that? Evidently it is mainly due to the extended drought in California that has adversely affected avocado crops. And this is of course due to climate change.

Chipotle uses about 34 million pounds of avocados every year. It also has a policy of purchasing only organically grown avocados. I would expect nothing less from a company that blames “man-caused” global warming for the drought in California.

A press release from Chipotle on this development read as follows: “While scientists’ understanding of drought and climate change is evolving rapidly, mainstream climatologists’ view of drought is that it is directly linked to man-made climate change.”

I’m not a big fan of Mexican fare, and I am less a fan of anything avocado, but Chipotle is a private company, free to adopt any policy it likes, regardless of how ridiculous.

So, just for giggles, let’s examine the folly of their position and claim.

First, the whole “organic” thing is a load of crap. If you want to eat only organic, it’s no sweat off my back. But don’t preach that organic is better for you or the precious planet.

Organic farms are thought to be pesticide free. That’s bunk. Organic farms spray their crops with pesticides just like conventional farms. In fact the US Organic Standards Bureau has approved over 20 “chemical” pesticides and fungicides commonly used on organic farms. And the volume of pesticides in organic farming is not even recorded by the government as is required in conventional farming.

On average, organic farms require at least 25% more land than do their conventional counterparts. In some cases it’s upwards of 50%. That means more farmland and less precious wilderness. Seems to me, if one wishes to “save the planet,” one would leave the wilderness alone.

Second, Chipotle claims it may “suspend” the sale of avocado products due to global warming. Suspend? Do they know something the rest of the alarmists don’t? If the world will continue to warm, would that not permanently adversely affect avocado production?

Now, organic or conventional, I feel the farmers’ pain out there. Indeed they have been suffering for 2 to 3 years. And it’s all due to “man-caused” global warming. Really!California poster

Well, according to actual science, that claim is again, crap! Tree ring studies in California indicate that this current “man-caused” drought is historically nothing. Rings show a drought that started in 850 A.D. and lasted until 1090 A.D. That’s 240 years! 50 years after that one ended, another one started in 1140 and lasted until 1320. Another 180 years. Where were the SUVs and coal-fired power plants then?1

In fact, Scott Stine, a professor of geography at Cal State says, “This past century has been among the wettest of the last 7000 years.”

As I stated, Chipotle Mexican Grill is a private company and thus can adopt any policy it wishes. What they shouldn’t do is fill their clientele’s heads with a bunch of nonsense regarding the merits of organic farms and the folly of man-made climate change.
