Democrat To Rape Victim: A Gun Would Not Have Helped You

If you recall, Amanda Collins was the University of Nevada student who was raped at gunpoint in close proximity to the campus police station. Even though she had a concealed carry permit, she was not allowed to carry her gun on campus because it was a gun-free zone, which as we know, made it a safe zone for criminals.

She was also a black belt in taekwondo, but her martial arts skills were no match for the rapist’s gun. She states that if she had had a gun on that day, she could have prevented the rape from happening and maybe even protected the rapist’s next two victims, the third of whom he murdered after he raped her.

Colorado is on a warpath to outlaw guns. They’re considering HB 1226 that would not only effectively ban shotguns, but would also ban concealed carry weapons on college campuses, making it easier for criminals to commit their crimes on students and faculty.

Amanda Collins was there to testify in committee and to voice her opposition to the proposed law. She told her story to the committee and concluded her testimony by asking, “How does rendering me defenseless protect you against a violent crime?”

One of the state senators to respond to her was Democrat Evie Hudak, who represents Colorado’s 19th Senate District. She basically told Amanda that she didn’t know what she was talking about:

“I just want to say, statistics are not on your side, even if you had had a gun. You said that you were a martial arts student, I mean person, experience in taekwondo, and yet because this individual was so large and was able to overcome you even with your skills, and chances are that if you had had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you …”

She then quoted a statistic from the Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence (I’m sure a very reputable source) that claimed that for every woman who used a gun to kill an attacker in self-defense, 83 women were murdered by them. Miss Collins responded that the senator was not there when she was raped, and that she most certainly would have been able to use it against the rapist.

Dana Loesch points out some other statistics that Hudak might think about as she moves to make more rape victims on college campuses:

  • In the vast majority of those [annual 2.1 million] self-defense cases, the citizen will only brandish the gun or fire a warning shot.
  • In less than 8% of those self-defense cases will the citizen even wound his attacker.
  • Over 1.9 million of those self-defense cases involve handguns.
  • As many as 500,000 of those self-defense cases occur away from home.
  • Almost 10% of those self-defense cases are women defending themselves against sexual assault or abuse.
