As the Democrats bray that President Donald Trump launched an “illegal strike” against Iran’s top terror general, they conveniently ignore the fact that Barack Obama launched nearly 3,000 military strikes without telling Congress.
Late last week, President Donald Trump gave the go-ahead to launch a missile strike inside Iraq that took out two of Iran’s top terror generals, Quds Force commander Qassem Suleimani, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces.
In the aftermath of the strike that took out the two Iranians who were in Iraq to coordinate more terror attacks, Democrats began pushing the lie that Trump’s act was “illegal” because he did not consult Congress before the strike.
This is a flat out lie. Trump is under no constitutional compulsion to contact Congress for such actions. Regardless, the Democrat consensus is that Trump’s actions were somehow “illegal.”
Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi quickly put out a statement slamming Trump for not getting “authorization” for the strike.
“The Administration has conducted tonight’s strikes in Iraq targeting high-level Iranian military officials and killing Iranian Quds Force Commander Qasem Soleimani without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) against Iran. Further, this action was taken without the consultation of the Congress,” Pelosi said on Thursday.
This is all garbage, of course. Trump needed no such “authorization.”
But, even if he did, Democrats are once again shown up as abject hypocrites because Barack Obama launched around 2,800 such strikes and never once got Pelosi’s “authorization.”
For instance, in April of 2015, the Washington Times reported:
This past weekend’s attacks brought the total to 1,458 strikes in Iraq and 1,343 in Syria by U.S. forces. Coalition forces allied with the U.S. have conducted another 655 attacks on Iraqi targets and 95 in Syria.
Mr. Obama has justified the attacks under his commander in chief powers and under the 2001 resolution authorizing force against al Qaeda, and the 2002 resolution authorizing the ouster of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
By 2017, the Bureau for Investigative Journalism reported that there were “ten times more air strikes in the covert war on terror during President Barack Obama’s presidency than under his predecessor, George W. Bush.”
Obama embraced the US drone programme, overseeing more strikes in his first year than Bush carried out during his entire presidency. A total of 563 strikes, largely by drones, targeted Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen during Obama’s two terms, compared to 57 strikes under Bush. Between 384 and 807 civilians were killed in those countries, according to reports logged by the Bureau.
The Democrat Party did not get incensed over Obama’s use of force. There were some voices wondering if Obama was stretching his authority for his drone and missile strikes, but no serious opposition to his actions was ever raised.
So, the left’s sudden proclamations that Trump is launching an “illegal wars” is all a bunch of partisan garbage.
