Whoa. As much as the media likes to talk about the internecine fighting within the GOP, it is the Democrat Party whose tussles have gotten out of hand. In the GOP the fight is over philosophy and the direction of the party, in the Democrat Party the fighting is about corruption and power. The most recent example has been playing out between DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) and Vice Chair Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI).
Just a few days ago Rep. Gabbard told the nation that she had been officially disinvited from attending the Democrat presidential primary debates by the office of the DNC Chair. On Tuesday night, Wasserman Schultz said that that just wasn’t the case. Rep. Gabbard quickly fired back essentially calling the DNC chairwoman a liar.
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said she was disinvited from Tuesday night’s first Democratic debate after voicing a call for more of them.
Gabbard, the vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Monday on “The Situation Room” she was told her vocal support for more debates had made her “no longer welcome to come to the debate.”
Gabbard said the message was conveyed to her chief-of-staff from the chief-of-staff of DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
The brouhaha has exploded over the issue of the limited number of debates (the Democrats only plan on conducting 6 sanctioned debates, whereas the Republicans will participate in at least 11 debates). Gabbard has been arguing for months that there should be more Democrat primary debates, and apparently this dissension bothers Wasserman Schultz.
However, it’s not just Gabbard arguing for more debates, every Democrat candidate not named Hillary Clinton has been pushing hard for more debates! In fact in a speech back in August one of those candidates, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley (D-MD), attacked Wasserman Schultz and her decision to limit the debates while standing next to her on stage!
“Four debates. Four debates? Four debates, and four debates only we are told, not asked before the voters in our earliest states make their decision. This is totally unprecedented in our party history. This sort of rigged process this has never been attempted before.
Who’s decree is this exactly? Where did it come from? To what end? For what purpose? What national or party interest does this decree does this serve? How does this tell the story of the last eight years of Democratic progress? How does this promote our Democratic ideas for making wages go up and household incomes go up again, instead of down?
How does this help us make our case to the American people? One debate in Iowa? That’s it? One debate in New Hampshire? That’s all we can afford? And, get this, the New Hampshire debate is cynically wedged into the high-pint holiday shopping season. So, as few people watch it as possible.”
While an embarrassing moment for Wasserman Schultz, it also served as a thermometer for the temperature of the Democrat community. The speech took place during the DNC’s summer meeting, and the ballroom was full of DNC leaders who met his tirade with thunderous applause.
But wait, it gets worse for Wasserman Schultz.
After her attempts to explain away any controversy, reporters decided to fact check what she was saying and see who was telling the truth in this entire Democrat debacle. And… it looks like Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a big fat liar. (No offense to big people, fat people, or liars who aren’t DWS.)
On Wednesday’s episode of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, journalist John Heilemann reveals that he could not find any evidence that Wasserman Schultz was telling the truth!
