This past few weeks have seen numerous violent riots take place in Great Britain. Cars were overturned and burned. Businesses were looted and burned. Bystanders were beaten.
Britain’s Labor Party immediately blamed the economic problems their country is facing, but further investigation has revealed that the riots occurred just for the fun of it. They were nothing more than ‘flash riots’ that were carried out by bored and stupid young people.
And an interesting aspect pointed out about these riots is that the British citizens that were victimized had no way of protecting themselves or their property.
Professor Joyce Lee Malcolm from George Mason University Law School pointed out that the British people have had their gun rights taken away from them over the past 90 years. Without any kind of weapon, the people were defenseless. Even the police wearing riot gear that tried to face off against the mob did not carry firearms to protect themselves or the public.
Prof. Malcolm also pointed out that the British legal system is extremely lenient on criminals and acts like it doesn’t want to send them to prison. The Home Secretary wouldn’t authorize use of water cannons to control the rioters and even refused to allow a curfew to be set.
In 1920, the British government decided to set up a set of standards or reasons that were acceptable for a citizen to own a firearm. Over the next 40 years, they continually tightened those restrictions until it was nearly impossible for a private citizen to own a weapon. In 1960, they removed self defense as a valid reason to own a gun. In 1998, they banned all handguns and in 2006 they outlawed any toy or replica that was realistic in appearance.
By 2003, only 5 years after the ban on handguns had taken affect, crimes committed with handguns doubled.
Everyone says it could never happen here, but far too many gun restrictions have already been placed on the American citizens. Many liberals today are pushing for a complete ban on all guns owned by private citizens claiming it will reduce crime. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is already signed the UN Small Arms Treaty for the US which effectively outlaws all handguns, shotguns, hunting and target rifles.
If liberals like Clinton and many others in the Obama administration get there way, Americans will soon find themselves in the same situation as the British with nothing to defend themselves, their families or their property.
The Second Amendment to the US Constitution reads:
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Many today may try to argue what was meant by ‘militia’ but I believe it best to defer to the man considered by most to be the Father of the Bill of Rights, George Mason, who said:
“Mr. Chairman, a worthy member has asked who are the militia, if they be not the people of this country, and if we are not to be protected from the fate of the Germans, Prussians, etc., by our representation? I ask, Who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers.” [emphasis mine]
Even one of the most liberal of our early presidents, Thomas Jefferson considered it a right and an obligation for American citizens to be armed:
“The constitutions of most of our States assert that all power is inherent in the people; that… it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”
“No freeman shall be debarred the use of arms (within his own lands or tenements).”
“I learn with great concern that [one] portion of our frontier so interesting, so important, and so exposed, should be so entirely unprovided with common fire-arms. I did not suppose any part of the United States so destitute of what is considered as among the first necessaries of a farm-house.”
“None but an armed nation can dispense with a standing army. To keep ours armed and disciplined is therefore at all times important.”
If Hillary and her cronies try to take our firearms, it may be like it was in 1776 when the people were called to action to remove the tyrannical control of the British crown.
