Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, has signed a bill into law that bans any Florida city from declaring itself a “sanctuary city” to give illegal aliens a free pass from committing crimes.
The bill would mandate that all local police must cooperate with immigration and federal law enforcement officials.
“I am proud to sign the bill presented to me by the Florida Legislature to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no city or county jurisdiction can get in the way of Florida’s cooperation with our federal partners to enforce immigration law,” DeSantis said in a statement on Friday, according to Fox News.
“This is about public safety, not about politics. We must do everything within our power, and use all the tools available to us, to ensure that our communities are safe,” DeSantis added.
The Republican-supported bill specifically cited Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers, requiring cities to work with ICE to hold illegals so that the immigration department can take them into custody for deportation.
That is one of the ways liberals have worked to thwart our immigration laws. They pass illegal local ordinances to force cops to release illegals before ICE can grab them up and deport them. That way, Democrats are releasing dangerous criminals right back into the population instead of allowing ICE to take them into custody for deportation.
Republicans oppose this left-wing policy, but in general there is no way to stop cities run by extreme left-wingers from forcing their police to stop cooperating with ICE without a state law specifically forbidding the liberal policy.
Fox added, “The bill narrowly passed the state’s Senate (22-18 vote) and made it through the House with more than a 20-vote margin. ‘This bill isn’t anti-immigrant and it’s dangerously disingenuous to suggest otherwise,’ Rep. Elizabeth Fetterhoff, R-DeLand, reportedly said.”
The discredited Southern Poverty Law Center, though, took a swipe at DeSantis for signing the bill saying DeSantis is using “racial grievance to drive a wedge between Floridians.”
One should remind the SPCL that illegals are not “Floridians” but are instead dangerous criminals that don’t have a right to be in Florida in the first place.
Perhaps, if Florida is lucky, many illegals will leave the Sunshine State for other places (preferably their proper, foreign homes).
