Florida Man Arrested After Threatening Physical Violence at an Elementary School Displaying Patriotism

A Florida man has been arrested and accused of threatening to stab kids to death at an elementary school because he hated the American flag-themed wall mural that adorns the outside of the school building.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported that Andrew Ivan Aman, 22, was arrested in Tampa, Florida, after making the threats, according to WTVT, Fox 13.

The police also said that Aman was remanded for a mental health evaluation.

The Sheriff’s office released a memo labeled “situational awareness” and “law enforcement sensitive,” on Monday describing Aman’s plot to “stab as many children as possible.”

Aman was apparently infuriated because the exterior of the Bellamy Elementary School is painted in red, white, and blue stripes and white stars emulating the U.S. flag. The memo explains that Aman hate the United States and was incensed at the school’s “obnoxious pride in America,” as “illustrated by the large American flag mural” on the walls.

The law enforcement memo also says that Aman has been previously diagnosed with mental disorders.

The school was named after one-time Tampa resident Francis Bellamy who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance in 1882.

Aman was apprehended with a black bag containing a large kitchen knife as he was headed to the school.

“If adults get in the way, he planned to stab them as well” as the children, the memo says.

The police were called by Aman’s roommate who called them after Aman confided about his plan to the man.

Crystal Clark, chief communications officer for Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, said that the investigation continues.

“An investigation is ongoing and charges could follow,” Clark said. “However, there is currently no safety threat for students, parents or staff of Bellamy Elementary.”
