If you owe money to the IRS for your 2019 tax filing, good news: you don’t have to pay up until July 15.

The tax deadline pushback is a result of the federal government’s attempt to deal with the mounting fears over the spread of the coronavirus.

On Friday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced the tax deadline adjustment as a move to ease the the burden many feel as Tax Day so unfortunately coincides with this viral outbreak.

“At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties,” he tweeted on Friday.

Mnuchin added that those Americans expecting a refund should file by the original, April 15 date so they can get their checks in a timely manner.

“Hopefully by that time we’ll have people getting back to their lives,” Trump said about the IRS effort. “Families and businesses will have this extra time to file with no interest or penalties.”

This will be a huge help, especially for people who are self-employed and have no backstop during this crisis.
