GOP May Have Majority but They Don’t Have Control

By Wednesday morning, November 5, 2014, Republicans were celebrating across the land that they had won control of the Senate and increased their lead over Democrats in the House. They believed that with control of both the Senate and House that they could accomplish a great deal and even reverse a number of Obama’s socialist policies.

Many republicans ran on campaigns of fixing or repealing Obamacare including the individual and employer mandates along with restoring our constitutional rights. Many of them also vowed to reverse Obama’s flagrantly illegal immigration program and uncontrolled spending.

However, just holding a majority does not give Republicans control, as they are finding out.

Republicans were finally able to pass a bill to approve and partially fund the Keystone XL Pipeline, but as promised, Obama quickly vetoed the bill. It takes 67 votes in the Senate to override an Oval Office veto, but Republicans only hold 54 seats, meaning that they would need to sway 13 Democrats to vote with them. The last I knew, Senate Republicans had mustered up 9 votes among their political opponents, but are still 4 votes shy of overriding Obama’s veto.

Over the past couple of weeks, Republicans tried once again to show their control by passing a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security but block the funding necessary to pay for Obama’s delayed deportation program. Knowing that Obama would again use his veto, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell caved in and led the passage of a Senate bill that included funding for the delayed deportation program.

House Speaker John Boehner, who generally caves in to every one of Obama’s demands tried to hold out, but at the last minute allowed a bill to pass that funds DHS for one more week. In an effort led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the House voted 357-60 for the one week funding extension. That was followed by a voice vote in the Senate and Obama signed the stop-gap measure just before the midnight deadline.

It didn’t mean anything that Republicans had control. The only power in Washington DC at the moment is called ‘veto’ and it’s wielded by the most crooked, corrupt and socialist leader this nation has ever experienced. The simple four letter word – veto – actually translates to mean the dictatorial control of Barack Obama. Unless enough Senate Democrats wise up to Obama’s plan to destroy our nation, the threat of Obama’s veto will continue to destroy, mock and humiliate the Republican Party and business in Washington DC will continue to be the same unproductive fiasco it’s been over the past four years.

In one more week, we’ll see Republicans cave in one more time. They won’t stand their ground. They won’t do what the American people voted them into office to do. They’ll cower to the power of Obama’s veto like frightened little puppies with their tails tucked between their legs. Instead of standing for the Grand Old Party, perhaps the GOP should now be known as the Gutless Old Party.
