Gun Stops Knife Attack, Bystanders Angry with Gunman

Imagine yourself driving along a street when you see a man wielding a knife threatening another person. You have a gun with you, so you do the right thing and stop your car, grab your gun, get out and confront the man with the knife, ordering him to the ground. You believe you’ve done the right thing when suddenly bystanders are getting angry at you and accusing you of being the aggressor.

It sounds convoluted, but that’s exactly what happened to one man identified only as Nick, who just happens to be a retired police officer from Salt Lake City. On March 17, Nick was driving in Chicago and describes what happened:

“I was just in my car on North Temple, I saw a guy pull a knife on another guy, a fight ensued, the guy with the knife was swinging it several times at the unarmed person.”

“I see somebody in need of help it’s just the right thing to do, the wrong thing to do would of been to turn my back and have somebody be stabbed because I didn’t do anything.”

“I told him to lay down on the ground and he stayed there.”

That’s when a couple of bystanders approach the scene and start making accusations at Nick. He tried to explain to them that the guy had a knife and had pulled it on someone else, but the bystanders continue to verbally assault Nick. One of them asked him if he was the police. Another bystander tells Nick:

“Let’s see the badge. Just because you got a gun, that don’t mean sh*t.”

By now more people were gathering around and cell phones were being pulled out right and left, but amazingly, none of them bothered to call the police or 9-1-1. Instead, they all started filming what was happening.

Social media is creating a culture of indifference towards others. It’s more important to capture what’s going on and then post it on social media than it is to call for help or get involved to help a victim. I wonder how those people that were recording the event would feel if they were the victim that was being accosted at knife point and everyone watching was just recording the event rather than helping? I’m sure they would want someone to come to their aid and at least call the police so why won’t they do the same for others?

Because our society has a created a self-centeredness where everyone is only concerned about themselves and could care less what happens to others. They also live in a world of double standards in that they won’t do for others what they would want others to do for them. It’s a sad commentary that speaks to the moral degradation of America and the path to our eventual collapse.
