The Hasbro Toy company has apologized and pulled from shelves its latest troll doll that many say has an inappropriate feature that promotes pedophilia.
Hasbro pulled its dolls after parents complained of the action button that makes the doll giggle and gasp. The parents were unhappy that the action button is in the doll’s crotch under her skirt.
A Change.org petition complained that the doll could have “long term affects [sic] on a child’s mental/physical health” because of the placement of the button. The petition received more than 485,000 signatures.
“Our society is conditioning our children to think pedophilia is ok,” wrote Jessica McManis, who launched the petition. “This Trolls World Tour doll named Poppy has a button on her private area under her skirt. When you push this button on the doll’s privates she gasps and giggles. This is not okay for a child’s toy! This toy needs to be removed from our stores.”
A toy company spokesperson said that the button was meant to be activated when the doll is put in a sitting position and was not necessarily meant to be pushed with the finger. But Hasbro said it understands that the button’s placement may send the wrong message.
“This feature was designed to react when the doll was seated, but we recognize the placement of the sensor may be perceived as inappropriate,” Hasbro’s Julie Duffy told the Providence Journal.
“This was not intentional, and we are happy to provide consumers with a replacement Poppy doll of similar value through our consumer care team,” Duffy said. “We are in the process of removing the item for purchase.”
Detractors of the doll most especially worried that children who have experienced sexual abuse may find the doll disturbing.
Others worried that the doll would help break down inhibitions about being touched inappropriately.
