Hundreds of illegal immigrants have brought mumps into the country across 19 states, according to a new government report.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that nearly 1,000 illegal immigrants housed in various detention centers in 19 states have contracted mumps, and it is growing.
The CDC says that cases continue to grow as illegals are moved from facility to facility.
Immigration officials insisted that they are working to head off the growing epidemic.
According to the New York Post:
In response to the report, Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox said medical professionals at detention facilities screen all new detainees within 24 hours of their arrival to ensure that highly contagious diseases are not spread.
The U.S. has practically eliminated and great outbreaks of these “childhood diseases.” Vaccines have helped reduce these communicable diseases here in the U.S.
But many of these illegals come from countries where medicine seems stuck back in the 1940s and disease runs rampant.
“The CDC report said more than 80 percent of patients were exposed while in custody. Mumps is a contagious virus that causes swollen glands, puffy cheeks, fever, headaches and, in severe cases, hearing loss and meningitis,” the paper added.
ICE has worked to make sure these things don’t happen.
Immigration officials have given more than 25,000 doses of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine in the affected facilities across the country.
