Jordan Starving Bomb-Sniffing Dogs to Death that America Sent for Anti-Terrorism

The United States went to the expense of raising and training dozens of bomb-sniffing dogs to send to our Middle Eastern allies, such as Jordan, to help keep their people safe from terrorist attacks. But now the U.S. government is reporting that the dogs are being abused and starved to death by the very people we hoped to help.

According to a report by the U.S Department of State, these highly trained dogs are dying of malnutrition, and other medical problems because the Jordanians and other governments are not bothering to keep the dogs in good health.

According to CNN:

Photos in the report, published last week, show emaciated dogs with ribs protruding from their sides. Their nails are overgrown, and their ears are home to ticks so engorged they have likely been feasting on the dogs for days. In some facilities, there weren’t any dog bowls — the handlers fed the dogs by simply throwing food on the floor.

For more than 20 years, the US has sent bomb-sniffing and specially trained dogs to partner nations under an anti-terrorism assistance program. Despite spending “millions of dollars” training and dispatching the dogs, State Department officials failed to ensure their health and welfare, said the report, which was launched after a hotline complaint about the dogs’ treatment.

Photos in the report shows dogs looking emaciated and starving, sick, listless, and in need of common maintenance like nail trimming.

Nearly all the dogs that have already died as well as the ones being reported as ill have gotten that way by neglect and not by accidents or service in the field.

Worse, the federal government has had evidence that these foreign countries including Thailand, Morocco, Indonesia, Bahrain, have been mistreating the animals since day one. Reports of the abuse are from as far back as 2016.

The reports do not reveal how much these dogs cost the U.S. to raise and train, but it has to be in the thousands.

If the training is anything like that given to drug sniffing dogs among U.S. policing agencies, costs could range toward $11,000 per dog. That is the price tag that the City of Glendale, California puts on the raising and training of its K9 force, for instance.

So, the training of bomb sniffing dogs has to be comparable to that of training drug sniffing dogs — perhaps even more costly.

But, regardless of the costs, the neglect is emblematic that U.S. aid is wasted on many of these ungrateful nations.
