TV actor Jussie Smollett’s hoax hate crime just might have led to the firing of a dozen or more Chicago nurses and hospital workers.
Apparently, a large number of workers at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital have been fired in the wake of the actor’s appearance at the facility. They were reportedly fired for gaining unauthorized access to Smollett’s medical records amassed when he was admitted to the hospital after the supposed attack he claimed to have suffered over a month ago.
Of course, we all now know that Smollett has been arrested and charged with faking the attack that made him the toast of Hollywood as a “victim” of a “hate crime.”
But while he was in the hospital, many hospital workers were apparently too tempted to get hold of Smollett’s records to pass them off to the media that was hungry for info on the poor, poor, actor.
The hospital, though, was not amused by all the breaches of its privacy policies.
As the New York Daily News reported:
According to one nurse who was fired following the incident, she never accessed Smollett’s records, but merely scrolled past them as she was searching for another patient. She believes the whole thing to be a misunderstanding which cost many their jobs.
The paper adds:
According to a Northwestern Memorial Hospital representative, HIPAA prevents the hospital “from acknowledging if a patient received care” there. Further, company policy prohibits said representative “from commenting on the employment status of any employee.”
Now, certainly it isn’t Smollett’s fault that those fired for breaking the hospital’s rules — or HIPPA laws, for that matter — acted badly.
But it was just more fallout from his race hoax.
This is akin to a getaway driver being at fault for the bank robbery even though he was only a driver. Or someone being convicted of murder for just being a member of the shooter’s group.
Just as the above is the case, Smollett and the media circus he created was one reason for their loss of jobs.
