Leftist U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein has ordered the U.S. military to release photographs of detainees being abused from at least seven different sites in Afghanistan and Iraq.
His ruling on Friday gives the government two months to decide whether to appeal before the photos could be released. Naturally, it was the ACLU that brought the case before the court, demanding government transparency and accountability.
It is believed that there may be anywhere from between a few dozen to thousands of such photographs.
Not that I’m necessarily against the release of the photos – I must admit I really don’t care one way or the other, but that aside, I have two questions. Why release them – to what end? And exactly who is this judge and what could be his real motivation for the ruling?
Judge Hellerstein is a senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He received his law degree from Columbia Law School.
Hellerstein was personally recommended to progressive President Bill Clinton by the late liberal Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan. One of Moynihan’s more famous or infamous progressive quips was: “The central liberal truth is that politics can change a culture and save it from itself.”
Moynihan was also a wacky warmest ahead of his time. In 1969 he advised Richard Nixon in a memo regarding CO2 emissions: “This could increase the average temperature near the earth’s surface by 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This in turn could raise the level of the sea by 10 feet. Goodbye New York. Goodbye Washington, for that matter.”
He was Al Gore before Al Gore and most certainly would never recommend a conservative originalist judge to Clinton.
So we know Hellerstein is a liberal, and what do we always say about liberals? They think, act, and react as their liberal ideology dictates, regardless of their profession. It is what gets them out of bed in the morning and what drives them all day.
Okay, so the judge has ordered the release of these photos, with apparently little thought to the potential negative effect on national security. I find this fascinating, considering that Hellerstein ruled in 2009 against the same ACLU that hundreds of documents detailing the CIA’s now-shuttered overseas secret detention program of suspected terrorists, including extreme interrogation methods, must be kept secret. He did so on the grounds that it could be detrimental to national security. Huh?
This is another “blame-Bush” fishing expedition probably designed to take attention away from the faltering presidency of Obama. Also, while the photos become the talk of the town, Obama will use the diversion to pass a few more executive orders.
But how does the left square this potential “photo bomb” with their decade’s long claim that Abu Ghraib, Gitmo, and other “torture” sites are just used by terrorists as a recruiting tool – that the actions of America are the major driving force behind terrorist recruitment, and that America’s wickedness just incites more hatred of and violence toward the U.S.?
Oh, that question is actually quite simple to answer. You see, terrorist recruitment was only an issue under Bush. The reasons there are so many rushing to join ISIS and others now has nothing at all to do with Obama or his policies. That’s just a silly coincidence and the release of these photos will just be further proof of what a bad guy Bush was, how lucky we are to be rid of him and how blessed we are that his replacement is a reasonable and measured intellectual.
