Liberals Aghast That Romney Thinks They’re Dependent on Government

We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men, women and people of other gender identifications are considered equal, though some are more equal than others; that they are endowed by their government with certain inalienable rights, subject to vote, legislative session or executive order, one coupon per family; that among these are life if you survive the womb, liberty with reasonable restrictions as defined by committee, and the pursuit of whatever floats your boat.

That’s the opening paragraph of the Declaration of Dependence, the guiding document of liberalism that will provide a road map for America should King Obama be re-elected.

The latest “scandal” about Mitt Romney is that he was caught on tape talking to some of those evil wealthy supporters and admitting that almost half the country is so hopelessly dependent on the government that Romney feels he will never be able to convince them that being self-sufficient and independent is better:

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what … these are people who pay no income tax. So our message of low taxes doesn’t connect. My job is, is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

The Obama campaign response was so contrived it was laughable. According to Obama campaign manager Jim Messina:

“It’s shocking that a candidate for President of the United States would go behind closed doors and declare to a group of wealthy donors that half the American people view themselves as ‘victims,’ entitled to handouts, and are unwilling to take ‘personal responsibility’ for their lives. It’s hard to serve as president for all Americans when you’ve disdainfully written off half the nation.”

I don’t know about you, but I am shocked, shocked I say, to find out that Romney spoke the truth. It’s a terrible thing for a politician.

I don’t know when we turned the corner and accepted victimhood as a noble thing, but I’m really getting sick of it.

Just the other day I was visiting a college campus and a group of students dressed in Aztec finery was giving a demonstration of traditional dances. It was great until the group’s leader had to go and ruin it with a spiel about victimization and the “struggle for independence” and the need for “decolonizing.”

Everybody’s a victim these days — of racism, homophobia, sexism, Islamophobia, phobia-ism, ism-phobia. …

All these victims look to Big Daddy government to fix everything, even if “fixing” one person’s complaint means trampling on another person’s rights.

The Declaration of Independence speaks of the Creator who has endowed us with our rights. Believing in that simple concept has the strange, marvelous effect of making individuals both strong and humble in one stroke. That belief is the source of everything that made America great.

The victimized Left’s Declaration of Dependence, on the other hand, has created hordes of weaklings who are just screeching with self-esteem, like a nest full of fledgling birds waiting for their parent to regurgitate a worm.

I just don’t sense any of the magic power of government that has the Left so enthralled. Liberals act as if government is the Great and Powerful Oz, but all I see is the unimpressive, somewhat pathetic con artist behind the curtain.

This country desperately needs to restore the idea that it is government that is dependent upon the people, not the other way around.
