Last Friday afternoon a black employee who had been fired two weeks earlier walking into his former workplace and began shooting people. Before the bodies were even cold, liberals began crying for more gun control. But what police said ruined the left’s narrative.
On Friday, 45-year-old Gary Martin — who had been fired in January — walked into the Henry Pratt Company in the south west Chicago suburb of Aurora and opened fire killing five former co-workers. He then opened fire on police until they killed him in a firefight.
Naturally, as the shooting was first reported, many began assuming that the killer was “another crazy white guy.” But it wasn’t long before police revealed that the man who killed five at an Illinois business was a black man with a criminal record.
Gary Martin, 45, has a criminal record and even served time.
That was only the first liberal narrative busted that day.
Before the bodies were even counted, liberals in Illinois and across the nation began calling for even more restrictions on our Second Amendment rights.
But, once again, the facts busted the left’s narrative.
Illinois has some of the strictest, anti-gun laws on the books of any state in the Union. Firstly, unlike most other states, Illinois citizens are not allowed to have their Second Amendment rights unless the state gives them a license (called a FOID card) that allows them to own and buy weapons. Worse, the state reserves the ability to deny a citizen his rights whenever they feel like denying them. They need no reason. The state just has to say “no” and that is it. No appeal, no reprieve, and no reason given by the state.
Large swaths of the population are denied their Second Amendment rights, but without a doubt, felons are already not allowed to own a firearm in Illinois.
As the left geared up to cry for more ways to take guns away from law abiding citizens, the police in Aurora noted that the killer wasn’t supposed to have a gun in the first place due to his criminal record.
“He absolutely he was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm,” Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman told the media.
Illinois’ strict laws were already supposed to have stopped this killer from owning a gun. So, how would even more restrictions have stopped this murderous rampage?
It wouldn’t have.
