Next to Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid has been the loudest and staunchest proponent of Obamacare. From the time Obama won the White House and the Democrats seized control of the Senate, Reid has championed national socialized healthcare for every American.
As enrollment began on Obamacare, members of Congress and their staffs began enrolling like most Americans are supposed to do. Speaker of the House John Boehner enrolled and found that the cost of his new health insurance nearly doubled. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell along with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi have both instructed their staffs to use the exchange and enroll in Obamacare.
But not Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Oh no, not Lord Harry. He raised his noble staff and waved it over some of his staff, absolving them from having to enroll in Obamacare. Oh, his personal staff will purchase their healthcare through the exchanges, but some of his committee and leadership staff have been given absolution and will be allowed to keep their federal employee insurance plans.
Evidently, Lord Harry’s memory is showing the effects of his age. At 74, he forgets that in September he told reporters:
“Let’s stop these really juvenile political games — the one dealing with health care for senators and House members and our staff. We are going to be part of exchanges, that’s what the law says and we’ll be part of that.”
Republicans are viewing Reid’s actions as being hypocritical, which they are. If Obamacare is as magnificent as Reid claims, they why allow some of his staff to avoid taking full advantage of it?
One senior GOP Senate aide commented:
“I’m sure that regular Americans who just lost their insurance will feel comforted to know that Senator Reid’s staff gets to keep their government plan.”
I hope that the thousands of Nevada residents that lost their private insurance policies hear about what their senator did in allowing some of his staff to keep their existing policies when he comes up for re-election in 2016. In the meantime, they can begin taking their wrath out on other Democrats in the 2014 election, letting Reid know that his support base is no longer supporting him and it’s time for him to retire back to his lair like the snake he is.
