A man who accepted a Cool Hand Luke-styled egg-eating contest paid for the game with his life and died after eating his 42nd hard-boiled egg.
First of all, you may recall the classic 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman as a convict in a Florida prison. In the famous bit, co-star John Kennedy presided over a prison barracks contest where Newman’s character ate dozens of hard-boiled eggs.
Well, the egg-eating challenge didn’t work out so well for Subhash Yadav, 42, who collapsed and died after downing 42 eggs during a challenge in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India, on Monday.
According to witnesses, Yadev was downing eggs rapidly until just after that 42nd egg when he suddenly collapsed and fell unconscious.
The egg challenger was rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences where he died. He never regained consciousness.
Doctors said he died simply from overeating.
According to Newsweek: “Weighing in at approximately six pounds, 50 eggs is significantly more volume than the average human stomach can accommodate without discomfort.”
The world record number of eggs eaten was set by perennial eating-contest-winner Joey Chestnut who knocked down 141 hard-boiled eggs in a mere eight minutes back in 2013.
But Chestnut is a trained eater and has developed the capacity to ingest this sort of volume.
Any normal person that would try this certainly risks the fate of India’s Mr. Yadav.
So, don’t try this at home, kids.
