Media Discovering There’s a Crisis at the Border

On behalf of all conservatives who have been called ignorant, rabid, fear-mongering and whatever else over the past several weeks for talking about the health crisis and other problems caused by the flood of illegal immigrants crossing our border, I would just like to thank ABC News and the handful of other “mainstream” media that have actually picked up the story.

This morning, ABC News reported on a government memo it obtained admitting there has been a breakdown in medical treatment of minors crossing the border and that, as we whacko wingnuts already knew, the feds have been putting sick kids on planes, trains and buses, and shipping them off to unsuspecting communities across the nation.

The memo explicitly discussed the situation in Ventura County, saying the feds were “putting sick unaccompanied children on airplanes inbound for [Naval Base Ventura County] in addition to the chicken pox and coxsackie virus cases.”

If you were to rely on the local newspaper, the Ventura County Star, then you’d get the idea that all is well, there’s nothing to see here, the usual. The fact is, there are illegal aliens carrying potentially deadly diseases who are being quarantined in the middle of one of the wealthiest counties in California, and for the most part, residents are unaware.

But hey, that’s just a wingnut talking, right libs?

In fact, here’s some more fear-mongering from us crazy conservatives who don’t know our facts: Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson  says that Central American parents sending their children north are often very aware of the dangers, to the point that girls are being given birth control before they go.

“I’ve met with enough of these kids now, including a 15-year-old in Nogales two weeks ago, who was three months pregnant, to have a real sense for what these kids go through,” Johnson told a congressional committee last week. “We’ve heard about how before they leave Central America, some of these kids’ parents actually will give them birth control in case they’re raped along the way.”

Sen. Dick Durbin added that he knew of girls as young as 3 who had been raped by cartel members during their journey north.

But that’s not the end of the problems caused by the lax border enforcement of this Administration.

When unaccompanied minors come here, they are handed over to Health and Human Services, which is supposed to find them a home to stay in. When possible, they are given to family members. Otherwise, they end up in foster homes.

The border meltdown has overwhelmed HHS as well, and they are being forced to cut corners on things like background checks. According to the Washington Times, as many as 10 percent of the children placed by HHS may have gone to unsuitable homes, where the parents can’t properly care for them because of finances, living situation or other problems.

“There’s such a large pressure on social workers to reunify children quickly, and [while] the protocols of what background checks a sponsor has to go through have been reduced, the number of home visits has also been reduced,” said Caitlin Sanderson, program director at the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project.

In March 2012, HHS took in about 1,000 immigrant children per month. In May this year, that number was nearly 10 times that, 9,500.

Just since October, the Border Patrol has apprehended an estimated nearly 60,000 unaccompanied minors, all of whom have to be processed. The vast majority of Border Patrol agents are stuck doing paperwork and child care, while actual forces at the border are as thin as tissue paper.

The whole crisis has been encouraged by Obama policies, but it is a stratagem of the drug cartels, a classic military diversion so that the crime syndicates can run their drugs, guns, prostitutes, slaves and what have you across our border.

Other groups that wish the United States ill have taken advantage of the opening the cartels have so graciously provided. Korans, prayer rugs and even an Urdu-to-English dictionary have been found at popular spots for border crossing.

From any angle, the border crisis is a potential disaster for this country. But then what do us crackpot conservatives know?
