On Sunday, Muslim Democrat Ilhan Omar (D, Somalia… I mean, Minnesota) went full anti-Semite with a lie that the Jewish American lobbying group AIPAC somehow employs its apparently corrupt money to control Congress.
The Muslim Minnesotan was discussing corruption in Congress on Twitter on Sunday night and at one point noted that “It’s all about the Benjamins baby.” Then someone asked her who she thinks is “paying” those “Benjamins” to American politicians to be pro-Israel. She answered with one word: “AIPAC!”
Of course, the truth is the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) does not donate money to politicians. But, Democrats don’t need facts when there is hate to spread.
It didn’t take long for the condemnations to roll in. According to TwinCities.com:
Democrats including Chelsea Clinton and Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y., and Republicans such as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., and Nikki Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, were among those to condemn Omar’s comments as anti-Semitic. Rep Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., called for her removal from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
The American Jewish Committee demanded an apology, calling her suggestion that AIPAC is paying American politicians for their support “demonstrably false and stunningly anti-Semitic.” The organization linked to a 2018 Gallup poll finding that 64 percent of Americans sympathize with the Israelis over the Palestinians, saying, “American politicians are pro-Israel because Americans are.”
Many jumped to Twitter to criticize Omar:
Words matter Rep. @IlhanMN. Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the US and abroad. The use of this tired anti-Semitic trope about Jews and money is inappropriate and upsetting. As Americans and Jews, we expect our politicians to condemn bigotry, not fuel it. https://t.co/SHKgVL5PWx

The time has come to demand Dem leaders speak out against @ilhanmn for her vile antisemitism. This isn’t going away. Where is @nancypelosi @SenSchumer @RepJerryNadler @RepEliotEngel @RepAdamSchiff @DWStweets and DNC leadership? Have they lost their ears, eyes, or damned minds? pic.twitter.com/mRhtDMJSJC

Congresswoman Omar’s statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself. pic.twitter.com/u3f2JHESFA

For its part, AIPAC said it is proud of its work:
We are proud that we are engaged in the democratic process to strengthen the US-Israel relationship. Our bipartisan efforts are reflective of American values and interests. We will not be deterred in any way by ill-informed and illegitimate attacks on this important work.
