Now it is ‘Racist’ to Correct a College Student’s Grammar

American University has once again made itself a laughing stock, this time by hiring to teach its staff a professor who says that proper grammar is “racist.”

The university recently hired Asao B. Inoue, a professor at the University of Washington in Tacoma in interdisciplinary arts and sciences. Inoue is also the director of Univ. of Washington’s writing center.

Inoue is well known for pushing the idea that a student’s writing ability should not be considered as a criterion to grade him because it is “racist” to assume everyone should be able to speak and write in proper English.

Not only is it “racist,” as far as this nut is concerned, he says proper grammar promotes “white language supremacy.”

Instead of considering proper grammar to assess a student, Inoue thinks teachers should only consider how much “effort” the student revealed.

That’s right; students who pay over $48,459 a year in tuition charges are going to be taught that writing well and using proper English is “racist.”

Recently, another professor, Walter E. Williams, a professor of economics at George Mason University, excoriated the hiring of Inoue at American University.

Inoue’s views are not simply extreme but possibly hostile to the academic mission of most universities. Forgiving and ignoring a students’ writing ability would mostly affect black students. White students’ speaking and writing would be judged against the King’s English, defined as standard, pure, or correct English grammar.

“Oral and written language provides a set of rules that enables us to organize thoughts and construct logical meaning with our thoughts,” Williams added.

Williams noted that their university poorly serves these students. After all, when they leave college and enter the real world, they will not be judged by the silly standards of professor Inoue, they will face ridicule and a discounting of their skills when it is realized they cannot even communicate effectively.

“They will be judged according to their objective abilities, and it probably follows that if they fail to meet those objective standards, the standards themselves will be labeled as racist,” Williams wrote.

Students leaving American University will be graduating with a costly degree that isn’t worth the paper upon which it is printed.
