The New York Police Department has taken a man into custody they think is seen on video sucker punching a 71-year-old Brooklyn woman, breaking her jaw.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when a 71-year-old woman was walking home from her day job and a man she does not know walked up to her and punched her without warning.
In the video, the young man is seen walking off all smiles and immensely proud of himself:
The victim, Joan Baptiste, suffered a broken jaw and unconsciousness after being sucker punched, according to ABC 7.
The woman was so stunned by the forceful punch that she wasn’t even aware just how badly she was injured.
“Somebody said, ‘We have to call 911,'” she said. “I said, ‘I’m going home,’ and they said, ‘No, you have to go to the hospital because you are bleeding.'”
Still, she thank God that she wasn’t hurt worse.
“God is good,” she told the media. “It could have been worse. I could have been dead. If it had happened in the street, with vehicles coming and they pass over me, then it could have been worse. So I thank God it happened that way.”
Baptiste was sure that her attacker is a criminal.
“Somebody like that, it’s a criminal,” she said. “Because if you have mother or parents or family, you’d never do such thing to nobody. You did what you did. But anyway, there is a God above. He is the one to judge you, because I am a believer.”
By Tuesday evening, the NYPD announced that it had taken a suspect into custody.
