Right after Obama won his reelection bid, the United Nations’ aptly named “Disarmament Committee” overwhelmingly voted to renew talks regarding the Arms Trade Treaty, which many say is Obama’s “way around” the Second Amendment. The U.S. is backing the resolution that calls for more discussion, which is planned for March 18 – 28. Proponents of this international treaty say that it won’t affect Americans’ Second Amendment rights. As one official at the U.S. mission said:
“We seek a treaty that contributes to international security by fighting illicit arms trafficking and proliferation, protects the sovereign right of states to conduct legitimate arms trade, and meets the concerns that we have been articulating throughout. We will not accept any treaty that infringes on the constitutional rights of our citizens to bear arms.”
It’s always about security and preventing terrorism. Why is it that ever since the United Nations was formed, we’ve had nothing but constant global violence, terrorism and war? Are we still in the midst of the “war to end all wars?” Why should we trust them now when they say that this treaty will only regulate international transfers of guns and have nothing to do with domestic laws?
Maybe this particular treaty doesn’t specifically affect U.S. gun laws, but once the U.S. gives them this power to regulate these international transactions, what’s to stop them from mandating in the near future that all member nations impose stricter and stricter gun laws until all law-abiding citizens are completely disarmed? Things like this usually happen incrementally. We’re the frogs in the water, and they’re slowly turning up the heat until we boil to death.
Proponents also try to quell fears by saying that such a treaty will require the ratification of a 2/3 majority in the Senate, and that the UN doesn’t have the authority to overstep the bounds of a nation’s sovereignty. I’d agree that the UN doesn’t have the authority, but they think they have the power, so they’ll do whatever they want in much the same way the Feds trample on state’s rights without regard for their sovereignty. Our own government doesn’t care about our Constitution. How much less does the UN care about our Constitution? Just look at Agenda 21. That was never ratified by a 2/3 majority in the Senate, and now “ICLEI: Local Governments for Sustainability” programs are all across U.S. counties and cities implementing Agenda 21 protocols.
The United Nations wants to completely disarm the world’s civilian population. They want to take all of our guns and beat them into “plowshares and pruning hooks.” Actually, I’m kidding. In spite of the fact that the UN building in New York bears that inscription, that’s the last thing they want to do. They want all the guns and weapons transferred from law-abiding citizens to international “peace-keeping” forces.
Gun owners have no reason to be complacent about the Arms Trade Treaty. As one writer put it, gun owners have every reason to be “up in arms.”
