Obama Declares End of 1st Amendment Right to Free Exercise of Religion

During the colonial days in America, many Europeans fled religious persecution and traveled to the New World. All these people wanted was to worship and live their faith as they believed the Bible dictated. At first they were overjoyed with their new religious freedom here in the colonies.

Then the British crown took firm control over the colonies and once again began trampling on the religious rights and freedoms of the colonists. Politics and control superseded any thoughts of free worship or exercise of religious beliefs.

This was one of many reasons that led the colonists to revolt against the British and demand independence. They fought eight long years against overwhelming odds, but only by the grace of God did the colonists finally prevail and drive the British back to England. The next task was to establish a constitution by which the fledgling nation would operate. Among those things most dear to Founding Fathers were the rights of free speech and religion, which is why those rights were spelled out in the First Amendment to the US Constitution:

“Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Note that it states that Congress shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion. But today’s America has gutted that phrase from the text and has taken on the same dictatorial infringement the colonists rebelled against so long ago.

Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court have all taken measures that persecute Christians for exercising their religious freedom. How many instances have we seen where Christian business owners are forced to cater to or participate in sinful, anti-biblical acts and ceremonies or suffer the consequences for refusing? Some have paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and others have ended up closing their doors and losing their livelihood rather than defy their Christian faith.

The Affordable Care Act, passed by Congress, illegally altered numerous times by Barack Obama and upheld by the US Supreme Court, is also being used to force Christians to act against their faith, namely with the contraceptive mandate.

Now we have the issue of homosexual marriage. Most people fail to understand that the Supreme Court did NOT legalize same-sex marriage. All they did was rule that four states were unconstitutional in their defining marriage as one man and one woman, yet everyone believes that homosexual marriage is now legal. Technically, in those four states and several others there are no laws that actually legalize homosexual marriage.

But one county clerk decides that her Christian faith is more important to her, so she refuses to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals or allow her name to be placed on the licenses issued by her deputy clerks. The whole nation went into an uproar over the matter and Kim Davis was put in jail for exercising her First Amendment right.

Over the weekend, Barack Obama publicly confirmed that Americans are not allowed to exercise their First Amendment rights if it interferes with what I believe to be the unconstitutional rights of sinners. Speaking at a Democratic National Committee fundraiser in New York, Obama stated, speaking about Republicans:

“The good news is they probably won’t use marriage equality as a wedge issue like they did in 2004 because the country has come too far.”

I believe the proper understanding of what he said is that America has FALLEN too far. Then he said:

“We affirm that we cherish our religious freedom and are profoundly respectful of religious traditions. But we also have to say clearly that our religious freedom doesn’t grant us the freedom to deny our fellow Americans their constitutional rights. Even as we are respectful and accommodating genuine concerns and interests of religious institutions, we need to reject politicians who are supporting new forms of discrimination as a way to scare up votes. That’s not how we move America forward.” [Emphasis mine]

What about the constitutional rights that Christians were given when the Constitution and Bill and Rights were first ratified? I don’t see how this is moving American forward, but rather we are moving backward to a time when the governing forcing are stripping us of our God given rights and freedoms.

The liberal media vehemently defended Obama’s claim to be Christian, but what Christian would promote the ways of what the Bible calls an abomination over the rights of Christians to uphold their faith? For the past six and half years Obama has been waging a war against Christianity and he’s been winning. Now he openly states that Christians no longer have the constitutional right to the free exercise of their religion.

If Congress passes the Equality Act, it will spell the end of any religious freedoms Christians have left. It will also nullify any attempts to regain those freedoms with a provision that does away with any religious restoration bills.

I never thought I would see the day that Christians would be denied the right to the free exercise of our faith, but sadly that day is already here.
