In one of the more out-of-touch, reality-denying interviews he’s given, President Obama told Fox News host Bill O’Reilly that there was “not even a smidgeon of corruption” involved in the IRS’s targeted harassment of the Tea Party and other conservatives.
Just to review, sometime in 2010, prior to the last presidential election, the IRS began sandbagging filings for 501(c)4 nonprofit status from conservative groups. While conservative applications were delayed for a year or more, numerous liberal groups, including one formed by Obama’s half-brother, sailed through the process.
The delays included repeated, intrusive questionnaires from the IRS that pried into not just the organizations involved but into their members’ private lives. Among the questions were demands to know about membership rolls, topics discussed by speakers at meetings, members’ personal and financial information, and in at least one case of a pro-life group, even the content of members’ prayers.
Dozens of organizations have joined a class-action lawsuit against the IRS for its behavior. The Administration initially tried to pass off the IRS’s actions as being the responsibility of low-level agents in Cincinnati.
Through congressional hearings, it’s become clear that the policy flagging conservatives for the special treatment comes from the top. The remaining questions are plentiful and include whether Obama knew about the IRS’s actions or even had ordered them.
There have been reports since the scandal broke that conservatives are still being targeted by the IRS, as well as by other agencies.
There can be little doubt that the IRS behavior is just one aspect of an off-the-record Administration policy. Obama himself has made no bones about his disdain for conservatives, as have his Cabinet members and various underlings. Almost from the start of Obama’s reign, the Department of Homeland Security has publicly warned that Bible-believing Christians, military veterans, constitutional historians and other conservatives are potential terrorists.
And there was Obama before the Superbowl, talking to O’Reilly, blaming conservatives yet again for his troubles. “These kinds of things keep on surfacing in part because you and your TV station will promote them,” the president said with a straight face.
Actually, Herr President, “these kinds of things” keep on surfacing because your Administration keeps doing them and never answers the public’s questions about them. That’s the odd thing about questions: If they are not properly answered, they tend to come up again.
O’Reilly pressed Obama on the IRS scandal and whether there was any corruption involved. (Hint: the answer is yes.)
Obama offered that “there was some bone-headed decisions” on the part of IRS agents, but “not even a smidgeon of corruption.”
It’s hard to tell sometimes whether this president is just plain stupid, lying through his teeth or actually delusional.
We haven’t seen the bottom on the IRS scandal, Benghazi, Fast and Furious or any of the dozens of other scandals from this Administration.
