Last year, the Obama administration fully supported the social uprising in Egypt that led to the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Since that time, an interim government coalition has been running the county until a new constitution can be written and adopted.
One of the few positive aspects of the Mubarak regime was the government allowed other religions in the country. Christians were allowed to build churches, worship Christ and their numbers were steadily increasing, especially in several areas.
Another positive aspects of Mubarak’s leadership was his edict that outlawed the Muslim Brotherhood, which didn’t stop them from existing and growing in power but it did stop them from becoming a political force in the government. Under the current regime, there is nothing to stop the Muslim Brotherhood from being politically involved and some reports out of Egypt indicate the radical group is close to becoming the majority political party which would give them control over the country.
The Muslim Brotherhood has said that they want to see Egypt become a Muslim nation that is controlled by Sharia law. The Egyptian military and police have been using Sharia law to justify their attacks on Christians. They’ve burned down churches and physically attacked Christians.
In their latest public display of Christian intolerance, a 17 year old Christian has been sentenced to three years in prison from posting a cartoon on his Facebook page. According to OneNewsNow, Gamal Abdou Massoud was also accused of handing out the cartoon to a number of his friends.
The case of Massoud demonstrates the double standard that has been taking place in Egyptian society and law. Christianity is still a legal religion, but the law does not condemn any Muslim that denigrates a Christian or Christianity. The same judicial system will prosecute any Christian for the slightest thing that may be deemed as an insult or offense to Islam.
And our supposedly Christian president has shown his support for the Christians being persecuted by renewing US military aid to the Muslim controlled government. The Obama administration is not only giving the Egyptian government military aid, but they are also funneling millions of dollars to the same people that are targeting and imprisoning Christians.
When I see how President Obama reacts against any human rights violations of Muslims and homosexuals, but repeatedly says nothing about violations against Christians, it reminds me of Matthew 7:15-17:
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.”
