Since taking office 5 years ago, President Barack Obama has continually cut and whittled away at the size and strength of our military. He’s cut the number of missiles, ships, planes, tanks and troops. He’s cut some of their educational benefits and training. The only thing Obama has increased for the military other than the number of gays serving is to extend benefits to the un-wed same-sex partners of active military personnel, but in typical discriminatory hypocrisy, benefits are not extended to the un-wed heterosexual partners of active military personnel.
Reports are surfacing that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will be announcing more military cuts next week. Instead of equipment and weapons, these cuts are going straight at the bank accounts of our military personnel, active and retired. To begin with, they want to cap military pay raises to only 1%, which is less than the rate of inflation. Additionally, they want to cut military housing allowances by 5% and raise the deductibles that active and retired military personnel will pay for their health care.
If you’ve never been in the military, you probably know someone who is or was. You should know that the pay is not very good. A new recruit only makes $1,531.50 a month before taxes. They may receive free housing and meals and healthcare while in basic training, but if they are married and have a family, it’s hard for those back home to survive on $1,531.50 a month.
A sergeant with 4 years in the service only makes $2,555.10 a month before taxes. That’s only $30,661.20 before taxes for devoting 4 years of your life to serve and protect your country. It’s still very difficult to support a family on $30,000 a year which is why many rely on the benefits like a housing allowance to help them make ends meet.
Obama and Hagel don’t know what it’s like for today’s military personnel to try to support a family while serving our country. Our military are faced with sacrificing life and limbs for what amounts to poverty wages and now the government wants to cut the benefits even further, making it harder for the military families to survive.
Do you really want to know where Obama’s priorities are? Just a couple weeks ago he announced that the minimum wage for government contractors would be raised from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour. Now he wants to cut pay raises and benefits to military personnel. The reason is that Obama figures that many of the workers involved in government contracts are Democrats, while historically most military personnel vote Republican.
Everything Obama has done for the military has made it less desirable as a career or even a short term occupation. It’s making it harder for recruiters to sell the military to high school graduates.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney sees the danger of more military cuts when he appeared on the Fox News’ Hannity show on Monday, saying:
“I’ve obviously not been a strong supporter of Barack Obama, but this really is over the top. It does enormous long-term damage to our military. They act as though it’s like highway spending in that you can turn it on and off.”
“I can guarantee you there’s never going to be a call from a future secretary of defense to Obama to thank him for what he’s done to the military.”
“The cuts are not driven by changes in world circumstances, but by budget considerations.”
“He’d much rather spend the money on food stamps than he would on a strong military or support for our troops.”
Most food stamp recipients also vote Democratic, so naturally they are more important to Obama than our military and our national defense and security. Financially and militarily, Obama is setting the United States up to be taken over by another world power. The question is which one?
