In the wake of a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has proposed a series of gun measures including a new “red flag” law that would allow police to confiscate legally owned guns.
At a Tuesday press conference, the establishment Republican told citizens that he “heard” the protests, USA Today reported.
“Some chanted ‘do something’ and they were absolutely right,” DeWine said. “We must do something, and that is exactly what we are going to do.”
DeWine said no one thing will prevent gun violence, but together, the changes will save lives.
“If we do these things, it will matter. If we do these things, it will make us safer,” the gov. added.
This is rather doubtful. Thus far most of the mass killers we’ve had since “background checks” became a thing either passed their check easily or stole their firearm from a relative.
As to these all-the-rage” “red flag laws,” it is far more likely that these will be abused and will only end up summarily taking rights away from innocent citizens.
After all, if just anyone can call a cop and claim someone else is “dangerous,” and that is all that is needed to raid a person’s home and take away all their legally held firearms, we know this will become the left’s newest doxing/swatting game against conservatives they don’t like.
Remember this, the very same people who are right now calling every Republican a “racist,” a “fascist,” and a “Nazi” are the exact same people who will have the power to call the iron boot heel of the police out on their opponents.
And how many angst-ridden, disgruntled, punk kids will “red flag” their parents just because they are mad at them for not letting them go t a party?
The only way a red flag law would work at all is to make sure that EVERY person who illicitly calls out the police against someone is forced to pay all the gun owner’s court costs if that “red flagged” gun owner turns out to be 100% innocent.
If the threat of being stuck paying ruinous legal fees does not scare off someone who is sure they are making the right “red flag” call, then maybe they do have a point.
But it is entirely un-American to be deemed guilty until proven innocent.
It is a huge mistake to rush these laws through without serious and extended debate.
The problem is our degraded culture, not guns.
