Penn. Middle School Teacher Apologizes for Anti-Trump Class Assignment

Officials for a school district in Pennsylvania have censured a middle school teacher for assigning her kids an assignment that insists that Trump is trying to “take over the country.”

The Trump-hating teacher was called on the carpet at Penn Cambria Middle School in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, by parents who were incensed with the assignment, PennLive reported.

The teacher’s paper asked students to pretend they were American refugees “being forced” to leave their homes because the evil Trump was launching a war to “take control of the United States.”

The assignment added that Trump was causing “fights in the streets” and was killing Americans in his war against the country.

The students were then asked to have a parent help them pack a backpack and were told that they would “never return home.” The children were then asked to bring the backpack to school so the class could discuss what was in the backpack and why the family added it to the backpack.

The full text of the assignment reads:

President Trump is trying to take control of the United States! There are fights in the streets! You have to pretend that you are a refugee being forced to leave your home, never to return. Please have a parent to time them for ten minutes while they packed a bag. When the time was up they were to take a picture of the contents of their backpack and then email it to me. If no picture, then draw it. You will have to present to us why you chose those items. This is due on Thursday. Worth 10 points.

But District Superintendent William Marshall said that the teacher realized the “huge error” in having an assignment that claimed Trump was perpetrating a war on America.

Marshall added that the teacher now says she understands that the classroom is not the place to air her personal political beliefs.

The superintendent sent a letter to parents explaining the incident:

Hello Duncan Middle School Parents, this is Principal Philip D’Amico. A question on a quiz given by your child’s Computer Applications teacher yesterday was brought to my attention this morning. The question was inappropriate and demonstrated an unacceptable lack of good judgment on the part of the teacher. An investigation is now underway, and the teacher has been reassigned during this process. Because this is an open inquiry, I am not at liberty to share any additional details with you at this point. I apologize for this incident, and for the offensive verbiage used in the question. Thank you for your patience, and your continued support of Watson B. Duncan Middle School.

The teacher claims that she downloaded the question from an educational website.

The School district also sent a note to parents saying, “Despite the fact that the teacher didn’t write, or intentionally select the question, the District views this error as a display of unprofessional behavior. The School District of Palm Beach County holds our educators to the highest standards. The teacher has been disciplined.”
