Police in Northern Nigeria raided an Islamic school for boys and report finding 300 students chained in a dungeon where many were repeatedly raped and tortured, the Daily Mail reported.
Police in Kaduna, Nigeria, raided the Koranic school located in the Rigasa area of Kaduna, after an anonymous tip led them to find the horrific conditions the students were subjected to. The police were also told that some students had already died and been secretly buried due to the abuse they suffered.
The boys and young men were starved, beaten, tortured, and sexually abused, officials revealed.
The owner of the school and six staff members were arrested and charged with abuse and slavery.
Shocking video shows how some of the boys were bound in chains, and featured their scars from the beatings and abuse.
Kaduna state’s chief of police Ali Janga called the case an example of “human slavery.”
Janga said the school was a “house of torture” and housed men and boys from Burkina Faso, Mali and other African countries.
Authorities added that the students were kept in “the most debasing and inhuman conditions in the name of teaching them the Koran and reforming them.”
“We found around 100 students including children as young as nine, in chains stuffed in a small room, all in the name of reforming them and making them responsible persons,” police spokesman Yakubu Sabo said.
“They claim to be teaching us Quran and Islam, but they do a lot of things here. They subject the younger ones to homosexuality,” former student Bello Hamza added.
Some parents came forward announcing their shock at the conditions and saying that they thought their children were only being given religious training.
