When man thinks he knows better than God, whether he admits it or not, he is assuming the role of God. Every single problem we see in the world around us can be attributed to this fact.
Adam was the first to think he knew better than God and when he acted upon that, it brought sin and death into all of creation. The entire universe has been suffering since and we see evidence of man’s rebellion to God’s Word everywhere we look. Our entire planet is covered with layer upon layer of sedimentary rock left over from when God destroyed the earth because of the evil in man’s heart. The majestic mountains and breathtaking canyons we awe at are all signs of a sin cursed world. And if you really want to get a grip on the impact of man thinking he knows more than God, just take a look at how many graves you see in the many cemeteries around your area.
Over the last fifty years, we’ve seen a growing number of instances where Americans believe they know better than God. We cast God and everything associated with Him out of our public schools, government and many other aspects of life. Whenever a void is created in life, it is soon filled with something else and in the case of the void left when God was evicted, it was filled with a humanistic and hedonistic self-centered culture that not only believed they knew better than God, but even rejected His Word as the only source of absolute truth.
A number of religious denominations tried to hold on to the authority of Scripture, but as we are now seeing, many of them are succumbing to the sinful and perverse pressures of a debauched culture. As our nation embraces such sinful abominations like homosexuality and same-sex marriage, more and more religious leaders and denominations have been caving in to the social pressures.
In 2003, the Episcopal Church elected their first openly gay Anglican bishop.
In 2005, the United Church of Christ approved same-sex marriage. At the time they had 1.1 million members.
In 2009, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America allowed for individual churches to ordain gays.
In 2015, The Presbyterian Church USA (not to be confused with conservative Presbyterian denominations like the PCA, OPC, and others) leaders voted to formally recognize and approve of same-sex marriages. With a membership of 1.8 million, this makes the Presbyterian Church USA the largest Protestant denomination in America to open embrace homosexuality and gay marriage.
The Bible is clearly opposed to same-sex sexuality (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; Rom. 1:26-32; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; 1 Tim. 1:8-11).
However, Presbyterian Church USA leadership believes that they know better than God and have the authority to change God’s Word or to pick and choose which parts they want to believe and which ones they don’t want to believe. In essence, that places them over God and His Word.
I’ve confronted ministers and pastors in the past for compromising the Word of God. I generally ask them two questions:
“Do you consider yourself to be a pastor/minister of the Word of God?”
When they answer yes, I then ask them:
“Then why are you unwilling to take God at His Word?”
More often than not, they get angry because they know in their hearts that I’m right. I would ask the leaders of the Presbyterian Church USA along with every other denomination that has accepted or endorsed homosexuality and same-sex marriage, the same two questions.
I would point out to them that once they compromise on just one aspect of the Bible, then how can they firmly believe any other part. If what God said about homosexuality or creation is not true, then how do you know that the Gospel account of Jesus Christ is true? How can you now trust the account of Jesus’ life, teachings, death, resurrection and promise of salvation?
In his letter to the Romans, Paul wrote:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” [Rom. 12:1-2]
Now that the leaders of the Presbyterian Church USA have conformed to this world and rejected what God said about homosexuality, how can you believe anything else they preach? Why would anyone want to worship under the leadership of men who believe they know better than God?
My advice to the 1.8 million members of the Presbyterian Church USA is to walk away from the apostate leadership and find a church that actually believes God’s Word from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21.
