I thought the big fight in the Democrat Part would end up being between Elizabeth Warren’s team and Hillary Clinton’s team… but perhaps President Obama plans to get involved too. In recent days the far-left of the Democrat Party has been taking tentative jabs at Hillary Clinton, in a likely effort to get her to shift to the left on her own positions.
New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio won’t yet support Hillary’s run for the White House, even though he basically owes his political career to the Clinton family. While Elizabeth Warren praises Hillary’s political acumen she does nothing to keep her own supporters from attacking the presumptive Democrat nominee either.
One issue where the divide between far-left and not-as-far-left has become evident is on trade. President Obama has recently been pushing a free trade deal called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (or TPP) and has been running into pushback from the most liberal members of his own party.
Hillary Clinton has thus far avoided being overly critical of the trade deal (she supported NAFTA back when her husband completed that trade deal but now seems against most similar deals), meanwhile most liberal Democrats have come out vociferously against the TPP. Including the only other announced Democrat candidate for President, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
President Obama must be feeling rather left out and lonely with all of this attention on the 2016 election… so he jumped in to criticize the people who have been criticizing him on the trade deal.
Specifically, he launched a full frontal assault on Elizabeth Warren, basically calling the Massachusetts liberal a liar (by saying she was only attacking the trade deal for political reasons) and then by implying that either he (the President) or she (the Senator) was stupid.
Most recently, Warren has argued that giving Obama the new authority could open the door for a future administration to strike a deal rolling back provisions of the landmark 2010 financial industry regulatory overhaul.
“I’d have to be pretty stupid and it doesn’t make any sense,” Obama said. “There is no evidence that could ever be used in this way. This is pure speculation. She and I both taught law school and one of the things you do as a law professor is you spin out hypotheticals and this is all hypothetical, speculative.”
Asked if this is personal, Obama said, “You know the truth of the matter is … Elizabeth is a politician just like everybody else, and she has a voice that she wants to get out there and I understand that, and on most issues she and I deeply agree. On this one, though, her arguments don’t stand the test of fact and scrutiny.”
I wonder how the leftist du jour is going to like being called out as a “politician” and having her own President imply that she is “stupid”?
Warren may be the Democrat toast of the town tomorrow, but she’s got a long way to go before the establishment in DC and other politicians are going to bow before her. In fact, I don’t think she really has a legitimate shot at ever being more than a squeaky wheel in Congress.
She’s far too liberal for mainstream America, her personal story almost got her candidacy torpedoed in Massachusetts… how will it survive scrutiny in “Middle America”? She also doesn’t possess either the personal gravitas that President Obama does or the far-reaching web of operatives that the Clinton family does. Liberals may love her, but she’s never going to lead them to the ‘promised land’, of that you can be sure.
