Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid initiated a rarely used procedure that is being referred to as the ‘nuclear option.’
Reid and fellow Democrats were trying to get the China currency bill passed when Republicans refused to allow passage unless the Democrats agreed to vote on Obama’s jobs package in its original draft. In response to the Republicans, Reid voted with 50 other Democrats to overturn the ruling of the Senate parliamentarian using a tactic known as filling the amendment tree to block the Republicans from being able to add any partisan amendments to any further legislation.
Many political leaders, both Democrat and Republican have said the measure will have definite repercussions and like any other nuclear explosions, there will be fallout and it could be very detrimental.
Early Republican responses are ones of anger and some indicate that Reid’s action has effectively eliminated all chances of any bipartisan efforts in the Senate for some time to come.
Reid called for a recess until Tuesday to hopefully give Republicans time to cool off. He is also offering to meet with leading Republicans in a caucus to try and work things out. As yet, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has yet to respond to Reid’s actions or his offer.
What I see is a US Senate that has become completely useless because of political party differences and ideologies. We have a destructive President at the helm of a congressional ship that has it two rudders locked in different directions, effectively disabling the ship from going anywhere. And on the horizon is a monstrous hurricane heading right for it. The good ship America is in desperate need of a new captain and TWO new rudders, but I’m not sure if those will come in time to avoid the pending storm.
