Sheila Jackson Lee for Homeland Security Secretary?

The Congressional Black Caucus is putting their best foot forward and recommending to the President that Houston’s feisty U.S. Representative of color and fellow Trayvon Martin champion Sheila Jackson Lee replace Janet Napolitano as DHS secretary. Didn’t think you could get much worse than Janet Napolitano, did you?

Many conservatives are up in arms over the recommendation, since Jackson Lee doesn’t have any credentials to head up the DHS. But don’t we know by now that you don’t have to have any credentials to hold public office? Just look at our current president.

Who cares about credentials? Not to state the obvious, but in politics, everything is political. Obama’s rise to the presidency had nothing to do with his experience or credentials. He was billed as America’s first “black” president. That’s all that really mattered. And if you voted against him, you were a racist. Janet Napolitano was DHS’s first female secretary. If you didn’t like her, you were a misogynist (assuming she’s a woman?). And now, the Congressional Black Caucus wants Jackson Lee to be DHS’s first black secretary. And it would be a political double whammy since she’s also a female. If you don’t like the idea, you’re a racist misogynist.

In a letter to President Obama, the Congressional Black Caucus Chair(wo)man Marcia Fudge (no, that’s not a racial slur; it’s actually her last name) wrote why they thought Jackson Lee would make a great DHS Secretary:

“Representative Jackson Lee would serve as an effective DHS Secretary because she understands the importance of increasing border security and maintaining homeland safety… Representative Jackson Lee currently serves as the Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, where she stands as a strong and honest ‘voice of reason.’”

The letter lists her being on various homeland security subcommittees as her credentials. As we’ve already established, her credentials are irrelevant. What really matters is what color and gender a person is. And as long as that person is also a full-blown liberal, credentials mean nothing.

But the “voice of reason” part of the letter was rather silly. Sheila Jackson Lee is the same representative that said from the house floor earlier this year that she was a “freed slave”:

“[Y]esterday was the official birthday of President Lincoln, February 12th, and although it was a tragic time in our history, I can assure you that it showed the greatest promise of America when people could come together and do something great. I stand here as a freed slave, because this congress came together. Are we going to be able to do it today to free America?”

She was talking in the context of government spending cuts (sequestration), equating them to slavery. So, increasing government spending is the “emancipation” from slavery.

She’s also the one who told people, “Don’t condemn the gangbangers.” It’s not their fault that the gun murder and violent crime rates are so high in places like Chicago. It’s the guns’ fault. It’s because we don’t have universal gun control. Don’t blame the criminals; blame the guns.

Voice of reason? Not so much. I don’t care about her lack of credentials to head up DHS. The Department of Homeland Security needs to be disbanded anyway. It’s a colossal waste of money. The only kind of “security” it provides is job security for those who work for it.
