British police made a shocking discovery, Wednesday, when the bodies of 39 people were discovered hidden in the semi-trailer of a truck driver from Ireland.
Police identified Mo Robinson, 25, of Portadown, Northern Ireland, as the suspect in the grisly mass murder.
Robinson’s truck was searched in the British town of Essex where police made the gruesome discovery.
Speaking from Belfast, Robinson’s family said they had not heard from him in a while and were utterly shocked by the story, The Mirror reported.
Officials have tracked the most recent movements of the truck and found it had been to many areas of norther Europe including Ireland, Britain, Belgium, Wales, and even Bulgaria.
Robinson is shown with his girlfriend in a Facebook post.
“We were called shortly after 1.40am by our colleagues in the East of England Ambulance Service to reports that, sadly, 39 people had been discovered dead in the container of a lorry at the Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue,” the Essex Police said in a statement.
“Originally, we reported that the lorry had travelled into the country through Holyhead on Saturday October 19,” the police added before detailing the truck’s routes.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that the truck was registered in their jurisdiction: “The Scania truck was registered in Varna [on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria] under the name of a company owned by an Irish citizen.”
Police officials have not released a motive for the deaths, but it is possible that it was an accident and that the people were all inside the trailer as part of a human trafficking incident.
It is also being reported that the trailer might be a refrigerated unit and if the refrigeration was on, the people inside could have frozen to death.
Friends of the suspect have already gathered to insist that Robinson is not a killer and must be innocent of any crimes.
But police say that the route the truck was taking was suspicious because it was off the usual track of semi-truck routes and would have added much time — as much as an extra day — to the journey
The investigation continues, but so far there are no answers as to the identity of the dead or explanations for the truck’s strange route.
Looks like my speculation that this is an incident of human smuggling is correct. On Thursday, police in the UK reported that all 39 dead individuals have been identified as Chinese nationals.
Police are not quite ready to assert how the suspect arrested yesterday is involved.
