A black man arrested for raping and beating a white New York woman said the woman “deserved” the attack because of “slavery.”
Court documents note that the parolee insisted that he should be considered innocent because of slavery, which was ended in the U.S. over 150 years ago, according to the New York Post.
“She was a white girl. She deserved it because us minorities have been through slavery,” Temar Bishop, 23, reportedly said to a witness who saw the beaten and bloody 20-year-old woman.
Bishop reportedly continued his justification adding, “This is what they used to do to us. This is what they did to us during slavery. They used to beat us and whip us.”
The 23-year-old suspect was tracked down and arrested in Virginia on Friday and hit with a number of charges for theJune 1 attack.
The incident began when the woman met Bishop and accompanied him to the roof of a public housing building in Mott Haven, the Bronx, police discovered.
Once alone on the roof, Bishop allegedly began punching and kicking the woman as he tore at her clothing. He continued beating her until she went unconscious even after raping her.
He left the victim laying on the roof but soon returned with another person to whom he boasted of his getting even over slavery.
The victim reportedly suffered internal injuries, broken teeth, a broken nose, and many other contusions. She also “vomited blood” according to the report.
One officer said that the assault was “one of the worst he’s ever seen.”
The suspect was charged with two counts of predatory sexual assault, attempted murder, rape, two counts of assault, sexual abuse, assault, and a hate crime, and is being held without bail in New York.
