Samantha Pawlucy is a sixteen year old sophomore at Charles Carroll High School in Philadelphia. On casual day, the honor student wore a pink Romney-Ryan t-shirt to school. When she entered her geometry classroom, the teacher began to bully her in front of the class.
The teacher, an obvious Obama supporter approached Samantha with a red marker and attempted to mark over the shirt telling her that she couldn’t wear that shirt in an Obama school. But Samantha would not let her do it. Then the teacher told her to take off her shirt and she would give her another shirt to wear. The whole time this was happening, the teacher kept berating Samantha about wearing a Romney shirt at an Obama school.
When Samantha refused to take off the t-shirt, the teacher ordered her out of the classroom and again Samantha stood her ground. By the time the teacher finished her tirade, some of Samantha’s classmates joined in as did the school janitor.
Samantha was so embarrassed and humiliated that she is now afraid to return to the school as she has had threats from other students about her shirt. Her parents are furious and went to the school to talk to the principal and teacher. According to Samanth’a dad, Richard, the teacher half-heartedly apologized, tried to explain it was a joke and then stormed out of the principal’s office.
Even though the teacher has been temporarily removed from that particular math class, Samantha and her father are demanding that the teacher be fired for bullying the girl and encouraging others to also bully her. They also claim that the teacher was violating Samantha’s First Amendment right to free speech.
Sadly, this teacher is not the only one who will do their best to pressure students to favor one candidate or another. In the last election, my granddaughter’s second grade teacher instructed all of her students to vote for Obama in the mock voting lesson.
I hope the teacher is not only fired, but that Samantha’s parents file criminal and civil charges against the teacher for bullying and inciting others to bully their daughter as well. Samantha is still afraid to go to school because of this humiliating incident and the teacher needs to pay for it.
