An Ohio teacher outraged parents by forcing middle school kids to chose liberal identity politics categories over religion, police, and other categories for who to save if the world was ending.
Students at Roberts Middle School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, were assigned a project entitled “Whom to Leave Behind” wherein they were told to chose which individuals were more worthy to save than others. Naturally, the choices were filled with nothing but left-wing victimology. The teacher has not yet been identified publicly.
The children were handed a sheet of paper and told that they could only choose eight of the twelve people on the list to put on a spaceship as the world ended. So, who did the kids want to save?
But the list outraged parents who saw nothing but left-wing victimhood and racism in the way the people to be saved were described.
For instance, the kids were asked if they wanted to save “a racist armed police officer accused of using excessive force.” Another description asked kids if they wanted to save “a female movie star who was recently the victim of sexual assault.” Still another asked kids if they wanted to save “a female Muslim international student,” and another wondered if the wanted to save a person with “a physical disability.”
Parents could not understand what all these categories had to do with determining who was worthy of being saved as the earth ended. And parents said the whole project smacked of political correctness and left-wing nonsense.
As the Cleveland Pain Dealer reported:
Ward 8 Councilman Russ Iona received a copy of the assignment from a concerned Cuyahoga Falls resident.
“I was kind of surprised by all the stereotypes on this,” Iona said. “I’m not sure of where they are going with this or what purpose it was to serve.”
Ward 6 Councilman Adam Miller posted the assignment on his Facebook page, stating he had a “sincere conversation” with the teacher and indicated the teacher will not use the assignment in the future.
“Inappropriate project for young kids. In my view, it clearly uses conjecture which is suggesting this fictitious behavior is somehow an accepted pattern. Additionally, it’s implanting prejudicial thoughts in these young impressionable minds. This is NOT building a – “culture of caring” – this is building a culture of animosity, antagonism & hostility! Why can’t kids be kids? Sad to see this indecent indoctrination forced upon our kids…”
The school said they “take the situation seriously” but would not say if the teacher was going to be disciplined for the outrageous assignment.
Parents say the assignment is insensitive and inappropriate, especially for middle schoolers.
“What does her being Muslim have to do with it,” said Bernadette Hartman, referencing another description on the list. “What does being female have to do with it.”
Hartman says her son received the controversial assignment in an 8th grade social studies class last week. It left her at a loss for words.
“It’s hard for me to put it into words,” she said. “It’s just hard.”
And she says it made her son feel uncomfortable, adding, “this paper divides. It doesn’t pull anybody together.”
One parent whose grandson received the assignment questions the teacher’s judgment.
“What did he expect to get out of this?”, said Denise Petron.
These parents are exactly right. There is nothing of educational value in this list, except to further liberal identity politics. But this is the leftism infesting our schools at every level.
