Trump Administration Expels Two Chinese Diplomats for Spying

The Trump administration has expelled two Chinese diplomats after they were caught barging onto a restricted access military base in Virginia.

The Chinese officials, who were with their wives oddly enough, only surrendered themselves to military police after a car chase and when their path was blocked by several fire trucks.

The administration said that they think at least one of the Chinese diplomats is a Chinese intelligence official operating under the cover of being a diplomat.

Still, according to the Washington Examiner, the apprehension was kept quiet by both the U.S. and the Chinese governments.

Neither the U.S. nor China announced the incident. It has fueled concerns about Chinese espionage in the U.S. as American officials increasingly warn about China’s threat to national security. American officials said Chinese officials with diplomatic passports have become more daring about showing up unannounced at research or government facilities.

One can guess the reason for the hush-hush nature of this arrest. After all, both countries are in the middle of delicate trade negotiations. So, it is likely both governments wanted this to be played out in the background so that it did not impact the negations.

The incident did result in a few changes:

Weeks after the intrusions, the State Department announced restrictions on Chinese diplomats, requiring them to give notice about their meetings with local or state officials and with educational and research institutions. The State Department said at the time that the restrictions were in response to Chinese regulations on the travel of U.S. diplomats.

The diplomats were detained after refusing to obey military police who told them to leave the base. Instead they gunned their engine and drove onto the base. The incursion resulted in a chase for a short distance.

We do not know what they diplomats thought they were going to achieve with the incursion.

It is just another example of Chinese nationals acting with apparent impunity inside the U.S. Granted the Trump administration has been stricter on Chinese nationals than Obama ever was.

Just last week a truckload of Chinese nationals were arrested trying to sneak across our southern border.
