President Donald Trump has enacted an order that will forgive the student loan debt for disabled military veterans.
On Wednesday, the president said that he ordered the Department of Education to “eliminate every penny of federal student loan debt” owed by disabled veterans,” the Associated Press reported.
The president made his announcement while speaking at the 75th AMVETS National Convention in Louisville, Ky.
“No President has said we are keeping America First, before, except me,” Trump said.

Trump also highlighted recent changes he has made to the VA.
“We’ve removed more than 7,600 employees who failed to give the vets the care they deserved,” Trump said.
“My administration is determined to do everything in our power to save the lives of our heroes,” the president added. “My administration has secured $8.6 billion for mental health services and VA is now providing same-day mental health services for people that walk in the door. To every veteran who is facing this struggle, I want you to know you are not alone.”
“I will sign a memorandum directing the Department of Education to eliminate every penny of Federal student loan debt owed by American veterans who are completely and permanently disabled,” Trump told veterans.
He also noted that the IRS will not becoming after veterans for this policy, either.
“There will be no federal income tax on the forgiven debts,” Trump said, adding that he hopes the states will also waive their tax requirement on such a gift. America, Trump said, owes its heroes “a supreme debt of gratitude.”
The new policy will immediately affect around 50,000 disabled veterans, the administration said.
