A new report about the U.N.’s growing sex abuse scandals finds that its so-called “peacekeeper” forces fathered hundreds of children that were then left behind in Haiti.
Investigators from the University of Birmingham and Ontario University spoke to 2,500 people in Haiti to find out what their experience with the U.N.’s forces was like and in the process found that these troops impregnated and abandoned hundreds of women and the babies they ultimately fathered, Sky News reported.
The U.N. force was in Haiti as part of the organization’s 13-year-long Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) which became one of the longest running occupations in U.N. history.
The researchers found that more than ten percent of the respondents knew of a child that was fathered and then left behind by a U.N. peacekeeper.
The most common sexual interaction was prostitution, where peacekeepers paid a desperate and starving young woman for sex and then abandoned her if she became pregnant.
Researchers also noted that many of the peacekeepers had already cycled back home by the time the child was born.
Age was no barrier to the U.N.’s reign of sexual terror. Researchers found girls as young as 14 who had sex with the peacekeepers who then refused to help them with a pregnancy.
There were also a number of cases of rape, as well.
It became so common that children of U.N. occupiers gained the nickname “Petit Minustah,” or babies of Minustah.
One Hatian man from Cite Soleil blasted the peacekeepers saying, “They come, they sleep with the women, they take their pleasures with them, they leave children in their hands, give them 500 gourdes [about £3.95].”
Another man told the investigators that the peacekeepers spread disease among women in Haiti: “All day, I heard women who are complaining about the sexual violence that Minustah did to them. And they had given them AIDS through sexual violence. There are also some of them who are pregnant.”
Haiti is not the first place to experience the scourge of sexual assault by U.N. employees. In fact, everywhere the U.N. goes, it’s the same story.
