UC Students Vote to Ban ‘Offensive’ U.S. Flag

The UC Irvine Associated Students organization this week voted to ban flags, including the American flag, from an “inclusive space” on campus.

Who says kids today aren’t learning anything at school?

The bill was authored by, get this, “Social Ecology Representative” Matthew Guevara. (If someone has a clue what “social ecology” is, much less how one represents it, I’m all ears.) It was seconded by Khaalidah Sidney.

The bill accuses all flags, especially the American flag (natch), of being “symbols of patriotism or weapons for nationalism.” Guevara apparently means that as a bad thing, otherwise I’d say it’s a fair description.

It continues: “… Flags construct paradigms of conformity and sets [sic] homogenized standards for others to obtain which in this country typically are idolized as freedom, equality, and democracy.”

Yeah, you know, guys, I have often thought we were going overboard with pushing people to pursue freedom, equality and democracy. It’s just asking too much.

I mean, some people clearly will be offended by such things, a point that Guevara makes in his bill.

But here’s the best part: “Freedom of speech, in a space that aims to be as inclusive as possible can be interpreted as hate speech. Let it be resolved that ASUCI make every effort to make the Associated Students main lobby space as inclusive as possible. Let it further be resolved that no flag, of any nation, may be hanged on the walls of the Associate Student main lobby space.”

It’s a little difficult to know where to begin dissecting so much stupidity.

For starters, I sort of doubt any flag was ever “hanged” in the Associated Students lobby, but the American flag was certainly hanged in spirit when the board voted 6-4 with 2 abstentions to pass this moronic bit of PC petulance.

If you read the original bill, linked above, it’s a mess of confused thinking and illogic that could only make sense to liberal college students.

I’d ask where the adults are on that campus, but they’re probably the ones who taught this stuff to the kiddies. After all, not only is it a public school, it’s a public school in California.

Despite what liberals may be teaching your kids, an “inclusive” environment is one in which people of many different viewpoints are free to express them without any particular group being able to lord it over or tear down the symbols of another.

That was the idea the Founding Fathers had in establishing the First Amendment and all the rest of the laws that created this country.

The flag is a symbol of those freedoms, and as such it is a symbol for all mankind to aspire to and for the enemies of freedom to run from.

When our schools and universities let children tear down that which symbolizes the very freedoms they abuse and lets them try to deny those freedoms to others, then we are truly lost as a people.

It’s been suggested that it is in humans’ nature to desire to be slaves. That does seem to be the drift of history.

But the American experiment has always been about individual freedom and the struggle to win it for all people.

It’s fascinating that despite liberal pretenses about liberty, equality and such things, their policies invariably work to take us backward to intellectual, spiritual, moral and physical bondage.
