Walmart Bows to Anti-Gunners, Ends Handgun Ammo Sales, Bans Customer Open Carry

On the heels of the shooting in Odessa, Texas, Walmart has once again made concessions to anti-gunners by halting handgun ammunition sales and banning customers from openly carrying guns even if they are legal.

A month after the shooting in El Paso, Texas, the nation’s largest retailer announced that it will pull back on more of its firearms sales practices. The company also made a call to Congress to enact more gun laws.

The company, America’s largest retailer, said it will stop selling handgun ammunition and “short-barrel rifle ammunition,” such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber, that can also be used on assault-style weapons after selling all of its current inventory. Walmart (WMT) will also stop selling handguns in Alaska, the only state where it still sells handguns. And Walmart will request that customers no longer openly carry guns into its 4,700 US stores, or its Sam’s Club stores, in states that allow open carry.

“It’s clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a memo to employees on Tuesday.

The company said it will continue to sell deer rifles and shotguns and the ammunition for those firearms. Walmart will also continue to allow concealed carry by customers with state permits in its stores.

“We feel like we are striking a responsible balance between the interests of law-abiding citizens who are exercising their legal rights and the safety concerns of our associates and customers,” Walmart executive vice president of corporate affairs, Dan Bartlett, said.

Doug McMillon added, “We encourage our nation’s leaders to move forward and strengthen background checks and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger. Congress and the administration should act. Given our decades of experience selling firearms, we are also offering to serve as a resource in the national debate on responsible gun sales.”

Naturally, and showing why it is a waste of time to try and appease anti-gun nuts, the left attacked Walmart saying that the retailer “didn’t do enough” to satisfy the left’s anti-gun agenda.

The left-wing group SumOfUs, for instance, excoriated Walmart saying, “Walmart reducing its ammunition market from 20 percent to 6 percent is a step in the right direction, but we need corporations to undertake more to prevent the next mass shooting.”

Wildly anti-Second Amendment Democrat candidate for president Elizabeth Warren also slammed Walmart for not doing “enough” on the issue.

In a Tuesday Tweet, Warren went on the attack saying, “This is a good start—but it’s not nearly enough. Walmart can and should do much more. And we need real gun reform, now.”

It is pointless to try and appease the left on guns. They won’t be satisfied until every American is disarmed and our Second Amendment rights rescinded.
