On Thursday, I wrote about the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. The National Park Service barricaded and taped off access to the memorial, but some congressmen and private citizens removed the barricades and tape to allow 91 World War II veterans who arrived on an Honor Flight to visit the memorial.
Since writing that article, I learned that the World War II memorial was built to honor the 16 million servicemen who fought in the war. It was built with private funds donated by citizens, corporations, foundations, and others. It was designed as an open plaza to grant easy access to the public and very low maintenance. In other words, there really was no reason for the memorial to be closed other than Obama wanting to hurt the public and then blame the Republicans for it.
I also mentioned that the nearby World War I Memorial was not closed, but remained open. Perhaps that’s because so few, if any WWI veterans are still alive to visit it. But that may soon change.
The White House has ordered all National Parks and along with hundreds of privately owned, funded or run parks to be closed also. If you are still not convinced that this is an intentional act to hurt the American public, then check this out.
Warren Meyer is the owner and president of Recreation Resources Management, Inc. His company manages a number of national parks and Forest Service campgrounds in a number of states. They employ up to 500 camp workers. The camps they manage are completely self-sufficient in that they receive no federal funding and no federal employees work there. Funding comes from the user fees paid by visitors and out of those fees, they not only manage the parks and campgrounds, but they actually pay money into the US Treasury.
Meyer says that they have been told that all private operations, park service and forest service facilities are to be shutdown also. He doesn’t understand why since they don’t use any government employees and actually generate money for the government rather than cost them. In a letter, Meyer wrote:
“However, today, we have been told by senior member of the US Forest Service and Department of Agriculture that people “above the department”, which I presume means the White House, plan to order the Forest Service to needlessly and illegally close all private operations. I can only assume their intention is to artificially increase the cost of the shutdown as some sort of political ploy.”
“The point of the shutdown is to close non-essential operations that require Federal money and manpower to stay open. So why is the White House closing private operations that require no government money to keep open and actually pay a percentage of their gate revenues back to the Treasury? We are a tenant of the US Forest Service, and a tenant does not have to close his business just because his landlord goes on a vacation.”
Meyer has contacted his two state senators, McCain and Flake, asking them for help. He wrote them:
“My company, based in North Phoenix, operates nearly over 100 US Forest Service campgrounds and day use areas under concession contract. Yesterday, as in all past government shutdowns, the Department of Agriculture and US Forest Service confirmed we would stay open during the government shutdown. This makes total sense, since our operations are self-sufficient (we are fully funded by user fees at the gate), we get no federal funds, we employ no government workers on these sites, and we actually pay rent into the Treasury.”
So please explain to me why the government would shut down private companies that manage the government parks and campgrounds that use no government employees and actually generate money for the government instead of costing them?
This is the same kind of temper tantrum that Obama threw when sequestration took effect back in March. He is doing everything possible to hurt the American people and make things look like a bigger mess than it really is.
One of my wife’s nephews and his wife are in Washington DC on the vacation they had planned long before the shutdown. He posted the following on his Facebook:
“Okay, so the surreal moment of the day: we are standing outside the barricade at the Lincoln Memorial when a female bicyclist crossed over to have her picture taken. Two security guards come running down the steps like she has breached National Security… this place is really messed up.”
He summed things up pretty good saying that the place (Washington DC) is really messed up. There is only one person responsible for it – Barack Hussein Obama and he alone can end the shutdown and fix the mess.
