West Side Story: Two Views of Living In America by Immigrants Living in America


West Side Story (1961) is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story told against the backdrop of immigration in New York.

The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture (as well as a special award for Robbins), becoming the record holder for the most wins for a movie musical.

This particular scene, with one of the best dance sequences ever done in a film, encapsulates the debate over immigration by immigrants who now live in America.
