The murder of 17 students at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida school was evil that brought heartache to a lot of families, a heartache that will never go away.
The question is, What should be done about school shootings and other shootings that take innocent lives? Should the instrument be blamed and banned? Should the NRA be blamed for something that it did not do? Should an organization that supports a constitutional right to “keep and bear arms” be hounded in the media and blamed by those trying to bring attention to their cause?
I’m not going to list the pro-gun arguments. The families who lost children don’t care about pro-gun arguments. We all should understand the enormity of their grief.
I believe it’s great that these young people have finally gotten politically active. Many have compared their marches to what took place in the 1960s and 1970s on college campuses to put an end to the Vietnam War.
Here are the differences:
- The Vietnam War was neither moral nor constitutional/Owning a weapon is not immoral or unconstitutional.
- The government was forcing young men to fight in an immoral and unconstitutional war/No one is forcing anyone to own a weapon.
- The liberty of millions of Americans was being taken away by the Federal Government/Prohibiting people from owning a weapon will mean a loss of liberty.
- The government was training men to kill men, women, and children/The NRA is not raining people to kill anyone.
- The Vietnam War was massive killing by government edict/The vast majority of gun owners have not killed anyone. This is especially true of NRA members.
We now have a vocal group of young people getting free media attention and funding from mostly Leftist supporters appealing to the government to take away a constitutional right from people who aren’t doing anything immoral or unconstitutional. That fact that some people are doing immoral things is no reason to take a natural and constitutional right from law-abiding citizens.
As we saw in the Florida murders, in addition to the shooter, the government was at fault. The FBI, school authorities, and the police department knew the history of the person who did the shooting and did not act on the information they had. Kyle Kashuv, a survivor of the school shooting, “suggested people looking for something to blame ought to be pointing at the ‘cowards of Broward County’ rather than guns.
“We’ve seen on so many different levels that the cowards of Broward County failed, the FBI failed, Sheriff Scott Israel failed. So many different multi-layered levels failed in Parkland. And it’s absolutely reprehensible that I didn’t see one single poster yesterday at the march that said … ‘F*** Sheriff Scott Israel.'” As we know, there are plenty of signs that say “F*** the NRA.”
There is some indication that it was government policies instituted during the Obama administration that enabled schools to keep hidden discipline records of students so they would not affect funding. Moreover, the claim had been made by government officials that discipline was meted out in a discriminatory way.
Leftists and the media have done a brilliant job of deflecting. They took the attention off the shooter and the government and placed it on innocent parties like the NRA, supporters of the Second Amendment, and law-abiding gun owners.
Getting rid of the Second Amendment and the NRA will not curb the murderous appetite of some people. Depraved people will always find ways to maim and murder. Timothy McVeigh did it with fertilizer and fuel oil and the 9-11 hijackers did it with utility knives and planes. The Jonestown Massacre, led by Jim Jones, resulted in mass suicide by a cyanide-laced punch of more than 900 men, women, and children.
First, these young people should be protesting the Federal government and its many incarnations. The government is a bloated monster that is under-educating and propagandizing young people. Government (public) schools are greenhouses for growing young socialists. Kids who come through government schools are products of a socialistic system. After more than 12 years of socialism, what makes anyone think that a majority of the graduates of government schools won’t think and act like socialists?
Where did the majority of the anti-Second Amendment go to protest? The Federal government. Schools and their communities should be free to solve their own problems without aid — financial or otherwise — from the Federal government.
Second, they should protest the Department of Education. Like it or not, the Second Amendment is in the Constitution. Education isn’t. Neither the word “education” nor the authority to govern education is found in the Constitution.
Third, to take a truly radical position they should protest any control of a government over education. Education should be in the hands and pocketbooks of parents, not educational bureaucrats, politicians, and the NEA, the nation’s largest union and donor to the Democrat Party. This way the curriculum, price, and safety of the schools would be in the hands of those whose children are in the schools that they immediately govern. If there is a shooting, the parents who govern the schools would be responsible. If they want armed guards, the choice would be theirs to make.
Fourth, school bullying is another issue. Most school shooters are products of the public schools, and many of the shooters have some history of bullying. These concerned anti-Second Amendment protestors might want to consider working to end bullying in their schools. There is a strong link between bullying and suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 10-24 and the second leading cause of death for college-age youth and ages 12-18. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, combined. (The Parent Resource Program) “According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay home from school every day because of fear of bullying.” (Bullying Statistics)
In reality, these protestors are not very radical. Their approach will not solve anything, but it will embolden and increase the authority and power of the Federal Government. Our national government doesn’t need any more power or money.
The $1.3 trillion dollar budget should be protested for all kinds of government overreach and unconstitutionality. If they were really interested in stopping the killing, they would protest against abortion and constant wars and their coerced funding. Five times more people are killed in America by knives than by rifles. “The most recent FBI data shows that in 2016, there were 374 murders committed using rifles in the entire United States. That includes so-called ‘assault rifles.’ However, a stunning 1,604 murders were committed using ‘knives or cutting weapons.’” Similar factoids show that teenage driving and texting while driving are also major killers of teenagers.
There are many more statistics like the above that are ignored in this debate. Let me add, however, that grief trumps facts for those who lost children to gun violence.
They are being played as are many Americans who are unaware of the effect of unbridled governing authority and power. The following is from James White, President of Alpha and Omega Ministries:
Christians should be the first to see this problem; actually biblically aware and theologically sound Christians anyway. Concentration of power in the hands of men in a fallen state can only multiply the effect of sin. This is why power must be diffused, not amongst a “ruling class” but amongst a responsible, morally aware people whose moral compass is not determined by popular votes but by an external revelation that shines a bright light upon man’s true condition. It is that very external source that has been thoroughly repudiated in modern Western thought, which now exalts the individual to the highest level of definitional authority. Yes, believe it or not, Bruce Jenner is directly related, conceptually, to the abandonment of liberty and the rise of totalitarianism, as contradictory on a surface level as those things may appear.
These children will be voting in the next Presidential election. They plainly do not view themselves worthy of the responsibilities of liberty and freedom, and they plainly trust the nebulous, faceless “State” to protect them. They know nothing of Lenin or Marx or Stalin or Mao — they only know Obama, and Trump, and a cadre of rappers and movie stars.
I’m not saying that these young people are being duped, but I will say that they’re being used.Don't forget to Like Godfather Politics on Facebook and Twitter, and visit our friends at RepublicanLegion.com.
