White House Solution to Sequester? Stop Tours & Pay Calligraphers $227,000 Per Year

On Tuesday, the White House took cost cutting measures for the first time since Barack Obama was president.  In reaction to sequestration, the White House announced that they were going to cancel all tours of the nation’s presidential palace starting on Saturday.  All tours that have been previously scheduled are also being cancelled.

In an effort to shift the blame to Congress, the White House stated that any constituents wanting a tour must go through their respective congressional representatives.  It will then be up to them to either conduct a tour or turn the American people away.  The official White House email sent to Congress stated in part:

“We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular spring touring season.”

The Secret Service claims that they will save money with the cancellation of tours by reassigning their people to other duties, thus eliminating overtime pay.  They issued the following statement:

“We very much regret having to take this action, particularly during the popular spring touring season.”

Many Republican congressmen are inviting everyone to visit the Capitol Building and other landmark sites in Washington DC.  One of those is Rep Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) who says that Obama is playing politics with the budget cuts to make it as hard on Americans as possible.  She issued a statement saying:

“It’s unfortunate the president has chosen to implement his sequester by canceling White House tours instead of urging Senate Democrats to cut wasteful spending.  We welcome the opportunity to provide a free tour of the U.S. Capitol to anyone visiting Washington who will now be unable to visit the White House because of the president’s decision. Spending is the problem. And instead of making responsible spending cuts, the president has now denied American people access to the White House.”

If you really want to know where Obama and White House’s priorities are during the sequestration, consider this bit of information.  The White House employs three calligraphers who are paid $85,953, $94,372 and $96,725 a year for their fancy penmanship.  With today’s computer technology, one person could create everything the White House needs via computer.  Spending $227,050 a year for hand calligraphy seems a little much to me.  Taxpayers pay for Obama and the White House and their consideration, such as tours, should be a priority, especially over fancy penmanship.

I heard that someone posted on Facebook that Obama should be forced to stop playing golf until the economy is fixed.  I would add that the Obama family be allowed 1 vacation a year and only for the immediate family.  Between the golf and vacations, the White House would have plenty of money to pay for staff to conduct tours.

However, this is another prime example of how little Obama cares about the American people.  We are nothing more than chattel to him, something to own, use and abuse.
