Why Are Republicans Held to Higher Standards?

I’ve noticed over the years that Republican candidates, especially those running for President or Vice-President, are held to a much higher standard than Democrats are.

Former Vice-President Dan Quayle was crucified in the press for misspelling the word ‘potato’ while the same press made former President Bill Clinton look like veritable saint after having adulterous sex in the oval office with Monica Lewinski. Former Vice-President Dick Cheney is drawn and quartered by the media for an honest hunting accident and President Barack Obama is protected by the same media, even though he has been involved in numerous misstatements about the number of states in the our union (57 v. 50), the age of his daughters, and the claim that the Kansas tornadoes killed  10,000 people: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” The death toll, still tragic, was 12.

Now even fellow Republicans are trying to find enough dirt on each other to thwart opposing campaigns while they ignore the imposter in Washington. Robert Morrow, a support of Ron Paul has taken out ads in the Austin Chronicle asking if anyone has had sex with Rick Perry, while Obama tramples on the US Constitution and refuses to uphold federal immigration laws.

I believe there are two reasons for the double standards. First is due to the media being as equally corrupt and immoral as many of the liberal Democrats they support and defend. Secondly, Republicans tend to be more religious and moral than Democrats and therefore their transgressions are not as flagrant as those of others.

As the 2012 elections are just starting to heat up, it will be interesting to see just how biased the media will be and to what level some will stoop.
