A woman in New York turned off the life support of a man she thought was her brother and the man died. But she turned off the machines for the wrong man. Now it is the woman who is suing!
Shirell Powell was told that her brother, Frederick Williams, would never recover and doctors at a Bronx hospital recommended that his life support be removed. At some point, Powell agreed and turned off the life support, according to The Blaze.
The man soon died.
But that was not the end of the story. Powell soon learned that the man she just killed was not her brother at all.
The woman discovered the mix up when she was dealing with the body at the funeral home. Upon closer investigation and without all the medical devices covering his face, the woman realized that the body was not that of her brother.
Now Powell is suing the hospital for misidentifying the man whose life she ended.
It turned out that the dead man actually had the same name as her brother. He was lying in the hospital brain dead from a drug overdose.
“That is my baby brother, so it was really hurtful,” Powell told the media. “I was worried, hurt, crying, screaming, calling everybody. It was a horrible feeling.”
Strangely, Powell and her family say they just took the hospital’s word that the man lying in the bed was their loved one.
The hospital said their loved one was brain dead and that was the end of that.
But later the family discovered their Frederick Williams had been stuck in jail the whole time.
“I nearly fainted because I killed somebody that I didn’t even know,” Powell said. “I gave consent.”
Naturally, Powell is suing the hospital for the terrible mix up.
